PC Build Log: Project:RED redux

Video: Justin Robinson's epic build following the demise of The Beast continues apace, with a whole new stop-motion vid to boot!

Justin's back to his building tricks, and after a brief period of mourning for his beloved Beast, he's continuing on with his latest, more personal, epic project.

We reported the start of the project a couple of weeks ago, and in between deadlines, events and popping out some awesome articles on the site, he's continued to build, mod and generally artfully craft his next home rig. Trust me, gang - you could do a lot worse than follow the project of Atomic's very own master-builder.

Exactly 604 photos were used to make the video, which take up 243.2MB. It was then assembled using the freeware software MonkeyJam, resulting in the video below (click here for HD):

We'll talk about his latest video creation shortly (Custom sound dampening for the win!), but here's a snippet of a another mini-tutorial in the log:

I really want to minimise any vibration noise in the system (which irritates the hell outta me), so I decided to do a little modding and dampen the fan array. The case covers most of the fans already, but this module is separate from everything else. The first stage is to dismantle the Airflow module, which is done by unscrewing its two legs (four thumbscrews), then pulling out the eight screws holding everything together...

But what you really want to see is the latest stop-motion, along with a cautionary note from the man himself: "A word of warning to anyone considering a stop-motion of their build: it takes a metric fucktonne of time to do. The first shot I took today was at 1:41PM; the last was at 6:32PM, with some 430+ shots inbetween. Exhausting."

But worth it!

Stay tuned to Justin's progress, and sign up for the forums if you want to ask him any questions.

Nice work with the Video, not sure how it's done the stop-motion part but it looks pretty impressive.

@Dan - I imagine it's something like: take a photo, move part, take photo, move part ..... 430 times over.
Then get the photo's and make them into a video, like a flip book.

Sounds Painful but the end result looks cool.
Maybe next time a few plasticine models walking around could spice it up a bit ala Pingu and the rest of those crazy shows that were on ABC when I was a kid.

That was awesome..
When I first saw "Stop motion" in the article I thought you must have meant "time lapse photography" because stop motion would take too long, but it was stop motion and it was awesome!!
When i see the cables moving into place at 1min 20 it reminds me of old crappy horror movies where tree vines, or in this case SATA cables are about to wrap around someone's feet and possibly tentacle, ah..,'violate' them.

Hey that build was alot easier when the bits put themselves together!.

I end forgetting to plug things in and normally cut my self on sharp edges. And my wife doesn't like it when I end up swearing infront of the kids and scratching the dining room table!

Wow where do I get one from?

how long do those stopmotion vids take??

Nov 3, 2010 6:51 PM
mark84, that's exactly the process :)

Dan_2, plasticine + carpet = mess :P Plus it took long enough already!

Bundy......no comment >.>

Sher, just send me the parts and a whole bag of cash! And, er, I guess you'll get a system eventually.

wayke, static buildup really isn't the problem it once was. As for seasonic PSUs, they're actually the manufacturer for a good chunk of both Corsair and XFX power supplies - so they're not too likely to 'burn'. Flannel does look awfully slimming on a rig, though :P

Alkahest, stupidly long. I'd pin it at 8....ish? hours for the shots, plus however long editing takes (I'd say about another five or six). It's a neat effect, but I'm not too likely to leap back into doing it :)

Nice video.

Where did the CF cable come from - with the mobo?
im trying to find a long one for cheaper than $25 on ebay for my EVGA board....

Also - how did you do the shots where things are not supported - eg the CPU's spin and the drive cover falling out?
TheFrunj
Nov 3, 2010 11:43 PM
Yeah, the long one came with the board.

Those shots were done with a liberal application of blu-tac and fishing line :D

Awesome vid, very nice lighting. I know the pain of stop motion i did a very crappy 10 sec vid of a xbox controller walking across a table, took a couple of hours!

I'm still a little hazy on the name, where does the red come into it again? And no, you cannot cover it up again with some fancy camera work........ LOL

Cover what up? The eventual colouring will be red and black, it's just taking a while to get there :P

Wow at first I thought bah another PC assembly vid, you've seen one you've seen them all. But then you went all stop motion ala Tim Burton only with a pc instead of puppets.
Nice work, though few would have the patience.
Maybe you can make a feature film, "PC devourer of parts" a motion picture by Justin Robinson.

Something tells me though, that you've probably had enough.
