Video: Electronic Arts announced a new free online FPS. Free? Where do we sign up?
We're a bit late to the party on this one - the news of Electronic Arts' new free to play Battlefield effort broke on the weekend while we were chillin' with our homies (well, actually, while we were at a goth club - don't laugh!), and it's already all over our forums. But we'd be remiss in not keeping things official and talking it up for those not in the know.
Battlefield Free4Play is launching on in the northern Spring of next year and will be a new, free online experience supporting full Battlefield gameplay and up to 32 players. And it's a PC only effort! Whoo! You can even register right now for the closed beta, which starts on November 30th.
The game will feature maps from Battlefield 2, along with weapons and classes from the more recent Battlefield Bad Company 2. The combination should do a lot to deliver some fresh, vehicle-based FPS action. Check out the trailer.
We're still waiting to hear from EA on the exact revenue system, such as ad-supported browsers, in-game product placement, or micro-transactions to get better gear. Battlefield Heroes, EA's similar free to play WW2 game, has certainly been successful on that model, and we imagine this will be as well - though the debate on our forum is raging as to whether this is a good thing or not.
Personally... we're keen to give it a go, and will sign up for the beta to check it out.
