Spike TV Video Game Awards 2010 wrap-up

Video: We catch up on the Spike gaming awards, but, more importantly, we catch up on the plethora of game trailers that came with it.

As far as gaming awards go, the Spike TV Video Game Awards are the veritable Oscars equivalent; not that we gamers have a plethora of choice when it comes to these types of award shows. Regardless, with great Spider-Man-like responsibilities comes a great Spider-Man voice actor, Neil Patrick Harris (sans unicorn), to host a two hour show that looks at the year gone by and, more importantly, showcase some awesome exclusive previews of the gaming years to come. While many of the 2010 game awards fell into the predictable category, it’s the now-expected release of some rather shit-hot game trailers that continues to validate the existence of this particular awards show.

And the winners are…
Just as Spike TV chose to gloss over the ‘Awards’ component of their show (and name for that matter), so too will we. Instead of providing the rather lengthy list of categories, nominees and winners, we’ve decided to just showcase the relevant ones. So without further ado:

  • Best PC Game – StarCraft II
  • Best Multiplayer – Halo: Reach
  • Best Action/Adventure Game – Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood
  • Best Shooter – Call of Duty: Black Ops
  • Best Performance by a Human Male – Neil Patrick Harris as Spider-Man
  • Best Performance by a Human Female – Tricia Helfer as Kerrigan
  • Best Driving Game – Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit
  • Best RPG – Mass Effect 2
  • Best Graphics – God of War III
  • Best Character – Sgt Woods from Call of Duty: Black Ops
  • Best DLC – Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare
  • Studio of the Year – BioWare
  • Most Anticipated Game of 2011 – Portal 2

Halo: Reach seems an odd choice for Best Multiplayer category, considering the likes of StarCraft II or the ever-popular Battlefield: Bad Company 2, while it just feels weird to give a Best Graphics award to a non-PC game (even though God of War III is gorgeous).

Be sure to let us know what you think of the final list in the comment section. Incidentally, if you want to see what games got the Atomic Game of the Year nod in our recent reader awards, be sure to check out the current issue, on sale now.

The real deal
But the main reason to watch the show is for the various trailers for yet-to-be-released titles. And in this category, Spike TV Video Game Awards 2010 did not disappoint. Check out our complied list of world premiere trailers below.

Batman: Arkham City

Portal 2

Mass Effect 3

The Elder Scrols V: Skyrim

theres a few good looking games there. But for me at the moment the game I'm looking forward to the most - Deus Ex Human Revolution. But even though I wasnt a big Oblivion fan Skyrim looks pretty cool and obviously Mass Effect 3 looks great.
