AMD's 6970 pricing revealed

The new Radeon 6970 and 6950 get a dollar value, while we ponder where exactly they fit into the grander scheme of AMD's and NVIDIA's VGA efforts.

Once upon a time, video card pricing and even performance was pretty simple. Essentially, the higher the number, the greater the grunt, and the more expensive the silicon. However, AMD's latest Radeon releases turn conventional graphics card wisdom on its head.

So, the pricing. The new 6970 and 6950, launched today, will have an RRP of $419 and $339 respectively. That's in Aussie dollars, by the way. Incidentally, US pricing for the 6970 sits at $US369. Just so you know.

However, it's worth noting that the 6970 is not AMD's best performer. That crown still sits firmly on the head of the previous generation's 5970 - which is a dual-core monster that'll cost you around $200 more than the 6970.

That's the trick here - the 6970 sits at a much more attractive price-performance ratio than any other AMD card. It's not the top dog, but it's probably the better enthusiast choice. Our testing, which is still in progress, backs that up - be sure to check out issue 121 for the full details. As a teaser, it does double the tesselation performance over previous cards.

In terms of NVIDIA cards, this release still leaves the GTX 580 as the single fastest card on the market, but again, it's a level of performance that you'll pay through the nose for - and will be unlikely take full advantage of. And, to be honest, it's not that much faster than the 6970.

Though we only got the card yesterday... but so far, it's a sweet bit of kit.

That doesn't change AMD's official pricing, though :)

Our pricing was received from AMD yesterday, and is actually a chunk lower than the initial pricing we got on Monday. Which was in turn much lower than the cards on Auspcmarket are going for. Remember that for now there are virtually no cards in the country (AMD has 3 samples) so those that do have stock can sell for a premium.

Expect in a few weeks to see cards coming closer to official pricing. And I'm working on some getting some preliminary numbers up amidst the pre-christmas labs chaos.

There are 20+ 6970s at Netplus but they are not cheap.

I'd guess they're grey imports - but that's very interesting info.

I guess AMD can set whatever rrp price they want but supply and demand will dictate what we pay more than anything.

I have spoken to AMD about this - proper story tomorrow - but they do expect the price to drop.

Does anybody else find the Australian pricing ridiculous?
pccasegear and auspcmarket are charging $550-$570 for the 6970 which is $150 higher than the AU RRP. Meanwhile US retailers (eg. newegg) are charging $370, exactly the US RRP. First we get a $50 higher RRP (even though the exchange rate is 99.5c) and then they add another $150 on top o_O

The HIS 6970 at PCCG is $409 on preorder, not $550-570 as you say shiney_face.

David, I'd love to talk to whoever at AMD you got your "RRP of $419 and $339" from, since the importer price to resellers is more than 10% higher than that, and that's before you add any GST....something doesn't add up.

Huh - Michael, can you fire me an email. I think there's an interesting story here.

I am chatting to my guy at AMD, and I know he's not messing me around, so I think there's definitely something odd going on.

I've already decided to follow this up in a further story tomorrow, so more than happy to chat more privately :)

I can't see any way to do that here - my email is michael at auspc.com.au

If AMD are going to show RRP below actual ex-GST wholesale, they should be able to supply us resellers then - I'd be happy to send back the 40-odd cards I have on hand now, if AMD could supply me at those *RRP* prices, since they are so far below the actual wholesale cost.

matt110, I think you need your downz looked at. The HIS 6950 is $409 on preorder... The cheapest 6970 PCCG had in stock was $549 but is now sold out.

This card looks like a decent way to jump into DX 11 after reading the review at Pcper.

I've been at Morgoth the last few days deciding on a new watercooling loop for when SB gets released and the 6970 could see a place in that system.

I want SB to be relased so i can unleash my bank account!
