Anyone for a wireless video card?

Tired of the tyranny of having your PC cabled up to your monitor? KFA2's GTX 460 WHDI might be what you're looking for...

Since the dawn of time, man has yearned to blot out the sun. Also, being the lazy bastard he is, he's been damn annoyed at the necessity to actually have a cable linking his monitor to his PC. I mean, aren't we officially living in the future now? Why so many damn wires?!

Well, thanks to video card maker Galaxy's spin off operation, KFA2, at least one cable is now a thing gone the way of the dodo. The company's latest offering, the GTX 460 WHDI, is an antenna-spewing video card that connects to your display - TV or PC monitor - without the need for any cables.

Magic!

Actually, the WHDI (and the name's the giveaway here) uses a company called Amimon's Wireless Home Digital Interface technology. This can deliver 1080p video over the 40MHz channel of the 5GHz radio frequency. The GTX 460 WHDI features five antenna, and these connect to a widget you plug into your monitor.

And it's got all the usual GTX 460 specs - CUDA support, PhysX, etc etc. It certainly seems an interesting option for a media PC (especially as you could hide a noisy box away from your TV), but something in our gut says it's not going to cut it for serious gaming - here in Oz we already get lag issues thanks to the preponderance of poorly sited servers, and adding in the possibility for wireless interference seems to be asking for trouble.

But we're damn curious to track one down and find out!

Will our PC's turn into porcupines?

*GPU with 5 antenna (x2 for multiple monitors)
*Wirelss LAN 1 antenna
*WeSata4 1 antenna
*WUSB4 1 antenna (or will it be small enough to fit inside a 1cm dongle?)
- 1WUSB per device or 1 for multiple?
- 1/device will be Printer, webcam (prawn), etc
*Speakers (# of antenna dependant on # of speakers [2, 2.1, 5.1, 7.1]?)

i reckon it would be very laggy too. With the interference from the PSU and other sources i was thinking it was close to April Fools day.

But getting rid of all those unsightly cables would be a good idea.

Ive had a mate that had someone plug in a wireless keyboard and mouse USB dongle in to his computer which lives behind his Plasma. Range worked about 2m and was dodgy at best. I found this out and put is on a extension and out from behind said Plasma, and now works like it should over a short range.

Should be an interesting read.

We already have something that broadcasts plenty of 720p AV all over the place, (they call it TV); why not localised?

Sure, not for games; but anything else will probably be fine.

That's pretty cool. But how can they ensure there isn't a loss of quality? And response time would suck.
