If you though Atomic's Beast was over the top, think again - the definition of super-powered computing has just gone over the top...

What kind of PC do you dream of when you dream unlimited dreams?

Is it packed with cutting edge hardware you can barely maintain, let alone afford? Is it watercooled up, into and out the wazoo? Are there more fans than you've had hot breakfasts? Two Blu-ray drives? A custom-built, heavy duty case...

Is it something like the custom PC that Deus Ex Technologies recently built for one discerning customer, and loaned to us for a couple of days to drool over? Is it something... like this?

Well, if our dream PC wasn't this before, it certainly is now. We could rant and waffle about the awesomeness, but let's cut to the chase - here's what's in this mighty edifice:

  • 980x at 4.21Ghz with 55 degree load temp
  • Tri Sli GTX 580s with 45 degree load temp
  • Watercooled Gigabyte UD9
  • 18TB storage (6 x 3TB hitachi 7200rpm drives)
  • 2 x 240GB Corsair Force SSDS in RAID 0
  • 33 Yate Loon blue LED 2000rpm fans (fans set to 1000rpm currently but can be set to full speed for maximum brightness. This can be easily adjusted from the top touch screen fan controller which controls every fan in the case.)
  • Two lamptron heavy duty fan controllers (FC-touch and FC-5 v2)
  • Two laing d5 pumps, Two EK RX 480 quad radiators, Blue Mayhem dye, Bitspower compression fittings
  • Imported Mountain Mods Extended Ascension Case
  • 1500 Watt Silverstone ST1500 power supply
  • Bitspower Molex power board and CCFLs.

The Beast was, and always will be, mighty, but it now stands in truly exalted company. To the lucky owner - respect. Also, you may be slightly mad, given that this MONSTER is worth about $12,000. And if you want to see more pics of this madness, then you should check out our gallery.

Prepare to drool...

Nice build for those with a spare 12k and no time to do it yourself (which would be 10x more fun).

Small error in the article, those are (obviously) not EK rads, they are XSPC RX480's.

But is it more RELIABLE than "The Beast"?

I was there at Power to the PC Sydney and you even struggled to get 3DMark to play nice with it.

Or.....Get a car, and spend the other $3k on a half decent PC. :)

nice rig, but giant case/too many fans are impractical imo, especially when its already water-cooled.

Too many storage devices, not an ergonomic space compartment.

Overall nice gut setup but the case has got to go!

looks like they made the case out of an old bar fridge

If it were dual socket mobo then I'd be drooling, really, the Atomic Beast would be more powerful if it had GTX 580's in it and some water cooling.

Still, very impressive.

With that size case you could just put an industrial fan in the top and be done with it. Rather than 12 fans. :P

Ooops, forgot to ask:

Looking in the image gallery, are those SSDs just sitting on top of the HDD bay not secured into anything?

When I think of my ultimate computer Dave... I think of something that's guarded by an elaborate vault door, then into a large cylindrical room, about 5m by 5m... racks of servers, with 4 GPU's in each. I have to cross this room to access the gaming interface room. TV's, and every apparatus a gamer can dream of. That's a good dream

This box however, doesn't hold up to the beast and I'll tell you why. I love seeing a balls 'n' all system... just for the hell it, too see what the best of the best combination can deliver. Then it was dismantled. But this Deus Ex box is for a customer who likes bleeding edge. But what is bleeding edge in the computer world. 6 months? A year? $12000 of too much grunt went down the drain.

I like the bits , but the cables and piping is run poorly and the fan covers could have been done with a proper enclosure that befits a $12K outlay.......
As said by mark84 , why 12 fans ? It looks ugly and cheap...

But , as they say , its in the eye of the beholder.....

Hi all, thanks for commenting on our latest creation. Seeing as PCs are ‘personal’ by definition, each system that we build for our clients is tailored to their particular needs and style. Just as not everyone shares the same taste in cars or houses, so too do PCs speak differently to different people. Mountainmods cases are certainly in the ‘love it or hate it’ category in terms of simple aesthetics, but nobody who has actually worked with one would ever cast aspersions on their sheer utility.

In this case, the MM Ascension was the only case on earth that could fit two quad radiators internally without extreme modding. These cases are built for extreme watercooling, plain and simple. Add the fact it has castor wheels like the Beast and is 100 percent aluminium, and we now had the lightest possible frame for this PC. Finally and most crucially, there is PLENTY of room for watercooling, wiring, upgrade components, and of course the 6 hdds, 2 ssds and five 5.25” bay devices. Seeing as a cases primary function is to house components, the Ascension performs beautifully. If anyone knows of another case that could fit all that gear we’d be keen to hear it.

Vllachia; the rads are indeed the amazing XSPC dual pass RX 480s. If you’re interested we can post full details of the rest of the loop.
Krispy89; The overclocked system is 24hrs prime95 stable and has been running folding at home on all three gpus plus cpu non-stop for 6 days straight without skipping a beat. This is a testament to the awesome ST1500 which we honestly thought would struggle. When we disconnected the system for transport to atomic we accidentally did a hard shutdown which reset overclocking settings in bios and would have shown a cmos error on bootup.
Mark84; The SSDs are secured with Velcro to the top and bottom hdds. They don’t budge.
Athlonite; We can assure you that all of our monkeys have perfect vision J. The loop design is for minimal possible temps without running parallel radiators. The chipsets are run back to front due to the Primochill kinking using the ‘direct’ method. Pump 1 > Rad 1 > GPUs > Pump 2 > Rad 2 > CPU > Chipset > Pump 1

frankly my rationality tells me that first of all with today's full tower case's you could easily fit two quad radiators with a bit of creativity and improvisation, which what you guys should have done.

so we still come to the conclusion that any monkey could assemble a machine together, but it takes a De Vinci to....

....no offense but the case is fucking ugly

oh you could have done it with lesser HDD/SSD that is.

hover? how silly.
all 20 of the top fans are pushing air up and the system down. I wonder if is weighs more.

or if it can me made to hold small objects and animals in it's air flow....

suprised to not see sr-2 to be honest. it seems kinda gimp to run 3x580 and leave it with a single 980x

A friend of mine is building his new PC inside a fridge.

He has more money than sense so he thought by having it placed inside a normal fridge would keep everything very sool indeed at between 5 - 9 degrees Celcius.

So my question is...

If you have unlimited funds, would using a fridge be good or can it become too cold for some of the components??

I'd be more worried about condensation build up in a fridge. The heat from the PC itself will help with that but if it's ever turned off overnight and metal parts are likely to get wet overnight.
I'd be tempted to use the fridge casing as it gives a good thermal seal and look at alternatives for actual cooling.

Your friend is not the first to consider such a setup. Unfortunately fridges are only powerful enough to maintain cool temps with little/no heat input. They can't handle anywhere near the constant heat load from a PC; your friend will end up with a dead PC and fridge.
