Duke Nukem Forever limited edition announced

2K announces the Balls of Steel edition, which means the (rather long) wait is just a little bit closer to being over...

It’s been a long time, folks – a very, very long time – but Duke Nukem Forever is finally on its way. And today 2K have announced a Balls of Steel edition, set to drop for Xbox 360, PC and PS3 on the same day as the standard editions.

And this is one special edition that really does look rather special. There’s the usual stuff, of course – a 100-page book, a set of postcards, and the traditional sticker – but 2K haven’t stopped there. They’re also chucking in a comic book, and, because poker is all the rage at the moment, some playing cards and poker chips.

Still not exciting enough for ya? Try a collectable bust of the Duke himself. Yep. That’s right.

And of course, the most important part for those who have been hanging out for this release for the better part of the fifteen years (!) since Duke Nukem 3D came out, there’s a copy of the game itself, all wrapped up in some limited edition cover art. So it looks like the only thing not included in the Balls of Steel edition are the balls themselves, but we're sure that's just an oversight.

The ass-kicking, Earth-saving, beer-and-cigar-loving action kicks off on May 6th, and we’re hoping, for everyone’s sakes, that it’s worth the wait…

if it's us$100 that's fine coz the au dollar is at 1.01 per us dollar... shopping around should find it for a similar price maybe a little higher coz everything always is here

I know it's probably the bleeding obvious, but it struck me all the same. Duke Nukem Forever actually predates this entire magazine, this entire community.

When they actually started work on the game, I was in primary school. Valve were adding the finishing touches to the original Half-Life, and a top spec "atomic" machine wouldn't even be capable of breaking 1GHz, without bursting into flames, and sending nearby neighbourhoods into darkness. I didn't even have public hair back then!

pkroeze you're forgetting the "aussie tax" where an arbitrary dollar amount is added to the US retail when it hits our shores. I'm thinking it'll be $150 here.

When you say poker chips, is it just the 2 shown in the pic or a full set cause i'd love to break those out on poker night.

It just hit me, from the time development began to its final release, I was able to start and complete my full schooling life Kinder to Year 12.

I heard this is a R+18 game and it was edited for Australia too. So i am guessing we don't see the strippers or the gore. Its now M 15+ classification.

So the rest of the world get the fun version and we get nanny state versions as usual ...

1. The game made it through OFLC unedited.
2. EB have it for $148, JB at $147

There's been a thread on the forums for a while now discussing all of this, so there's no need to speculate.

Steam are now adding Tax to all pre-orders so the price will be the same as retail.

Is Steam doing that? What type of tax? I think thats a bit dodgy. Most Government taxes are not applied to products sold digitally such as import duties. I am also of the opinion that GST should not apply as well. Particularly if Steam is not a registered company in Australia which again on my reading it isnt. In other words it pays taxes in its country of registration only.
In fact I have just mentioned this to someone else in my office who does deal with matters lke this and on first reading he was also of the opinion that the price on Steam should be significantly cheaper than retail because of the taxes issue and so forth . . .

which leads to the conclusion that:

Either Steam or the Game publishers are blatantly ripping you the consumer off. Indeed I have had a discussion some years ago on this very forum where I argued that games bought over Steam will inevitably be sold at the same price as in shops. Simply because of greed. Digital distribution might provide some benefits to consumers but cost in my opinion is not one of them. The attraction for publishers though is a significant increase in their profit margin. Seriously significant. In other words people dont do anything unless it will make them money. And in the world of consumer goods that money invariably comes from the consumer and is reallocated to the publisher/distributor.

This could be a great article for Atomic to look at. Just what are the costs in Digital Distribution and are we as consumer really getting as ripped off as I suspect we are?
