Dead Island - zombies that will make you cry

Video: What happens when you cross Coldplay and zombies? You get just about the saddest, most zombie-filled game trailer we've ever seen.

Dead Island, the upcoming game from Techland, has kind of blindsided us. Out of nowhere, this zombie survival game suddenly has us waiting for its release with baited, zombie-flavoured breath.

Why?

Well, it's this wonderful, and deeply moving trailer. Our colleague John Gillooly from PCT&A (they hate it when you call it that) linked it around to most of the office this morning (after IGN got the exclusive reveal), and so far it's getting acclaimed as quite possibly one of the best game trailers of all time.

(rumours that it made us a little misty are totally unfounded)

Yeah, if that doesn't tug your heart strings, you're probably mostly zombie yourself.

But what's that about the Coldplay thing? Well, one of the hit tracks from Coldplay's second album had a video that featured a very similar filmed-backwards set-up - and a kind of similarly fatal resolution...

nukejockey Feb 17, 2011 9:36 PM	SMC - its not delayed due to them re-jigging the engine or anything. They simply didn't have a publisher for it so worked on other games in the interim.

hectorbustnuts Feb 18, 2011 9:50 AM	It certainly a damn good example of how good editing can add so much to a film, be it a full length movie or just a teaser trailer. It's no where close to having half as much impact in real-time chronological order. The first time I saw the original version, I was put in mind of Christopher Nolan's "Memento"...with the two time lines of the same narrative converging on a single point. Ever watched that in chronological order? No where near as good. (It's funny...I actually googled "dead island trailer chronological" hoping someone had re-edited it...found it on youtube and came in here to post it, only to find I'd been beaten by nukey. Fucker.)

codecreeper Feb 18, 2011 12:10 PM	i liked the trailer and i was wondering was that Father a real person. When he grabbed the little girl it seemed rather like a real person. If you look closer towards the end the father changes from 3d to real like.

Cold E@rth Feb 18, 2011 9:18 PM	Excellent trailer. The best thing I liked about it was the ending where the dad (in reverse) is about to 'grab' his daughter: the scene nicely juxtaposes against what you actually see in this clip - he 'loses' his daughter right there and then... Very moving. CE out.

Bodie_CI5 Feb 20, 2011 8:54 PM	A superb,and most eerily beautiful, trailer. The soundtrack is so perfectly in tune with the visuals, it was as if Coldplay were contacted to write the score. But I don't think I've ever been so "in to" a trailer, with the possible exception of the WotLK cinematic.
