OCZ Announces Vertex 3 SATA III SSDs

The masters of solid-state storage threaten to blow our minds all over again with their newest range.

Anyone who’s been reading Atomic for any period of time knows that we’re rather fond of OCZ’s range of solid-state drives. A look back through our archives reveals a blinding assortment of Hot Awards and the overuse of words such as ‘blazing’, ‘awe’, ‘unimprovable’ ( …is that even a word?) and ‘drool’.

So you can imagine the girly squealing heard around the office at the unveiling of their brand-spanking new Vertex 3 SATA III range.

The Vertex 3 is the follow-up to the rather spectacular success of the Vertex 2, but this time they’re harnessing the 6Gbps speed of SATA III and combining it with their new SandForce SF-2200 SSD processer and 2Xnm MLC NAND flash technology. The result? Well, they’re claiming read and write speeds of up to 500MB/s – which is more than double the results we got when we tested the Vertex 2 last year. Also impressive is a claimed 60,000 IOPS (4K random write) which Ryan Peterson, CEO of OCZ has described as ‘the highest of any current 2.5 inch SSD on the market today’.

At the risk of repeating ourselves… drool.

The Vertex 3 will be available in 120GB and 240GB capacities. There’s also an enterprise-class Pro range – optimized for reliability, endurance and security and featuring an SF-2500 SATA III processor – that OCZ are pitching as perfect for server farms and IT infrastructure. The Vertex 3 Pro will come in 100GB, 200GB and 400GB models.

The entire Vertex 3 range will make its grand debut at CeBit in Hannover, Germany next week, and will begin shipping shortly after. We can’t wait to getting our grubby little hands on one of these puppies and put it through its paces – look for the washup in an upcoming issue of the magazine.

I've held off upgrading for one of these, native SATA III support = win. Only one problem that I see: imagine how much they'll cost.

time to save up for a 120GB one...if prices hold true ($250 for the 120GB)then its a steal!

i wonder if these will fix the issue the current vertex 2's are haveing with NAND flash issue..

Are they going to be backward compatible with SATA2 Motherboards?

I am in the market for a HDD upgrade and was going to go an SSD for the OS and Apps and have a normal HDD for storage. But if its not backwards compatible then I may have to wait till I upgrade CPU, RAM and Mobo as well (which I wasnt planning to do till BF3 comes out).

You require a sata3 bus in your motherboard to enjoy the full benefits of a sata3 drive

@Ghost and Meta - What if you purchased a Sata 3 Pci Card?
then you can buy it now and use it to its full benefit the average about 40 bucks for the smaller ones with 2 sata 3 ports and who know, you could require it after the upgrade too!

Thanks for that Dazerath. That is always a possibility.

Aaahh! now we talking - 2 x 240gb for me. OS & Games. No raid. Normal HDD for storage too.

Plenty of room to grow then.
