The memory makers announce their newest range of SSD's, and they're promising us some blazing speeds...
Hot on the heels of the release of OCZ’s latest range of SSDs, Patriot have announced their new Wildfire range.
Using the same Sandforce SF-2200 SSD processor technology that powers OCZ’s Vertex 3, and combining it with a SATA 6.0 GBps interface, Patriot are claiming read and write speeds up to a very impressive 500MB/s, which would make this the “fastest SSD drive we have ever released to the public,” according to Patriot’s VP of Engineering, Les Henry.
One of the things we liked best about Patriot’s last SSD outing, the Torqx, was the 2.5 to 3.5in adapter that shipped with the unit, which saved us the hassle of having to jimmy together a mount for use cases that didn’t feature a specific 2.5in drive bay. Happily, the Wildfire will ship with that same very helpful little piece of metal.
You’ll be able to get your hands on the Wildfire in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB flavours – but we’re not quite sure when and for how much. The announcement gives us only a vague “Q2 2011” release date, which is any time between now and June, and we’re guessing pricing information won’t be forthcoming until a little closer to shipping.
In any case, we look forward to getting one of these into our labs and putting it through its paces just as soon as we can. Will it live up to its name and burn down our offices with its blazing speeds? Find out in an upcoming issue of our fine publication (if we can still publish it from inside an inferno, that is).
