Footage of the next Unreal Engine

Someone's been a naughty journo, but the rest of us get to see just how pretty the new Unreal Engine is. And it's VERY pretty...

At the recent Game Developer's Conference, Epic was keen to show off just how pretty and, well, epic, it's new Unreal Engine is going to be. Of course, such forward-looking tech demos and discussions are usually heavily NDA-ed (that is, you usually have to sign a non-disclosure agreement, usually keyed to a date, to be included). However, all it takes is one dude to decide to break ranks...

And suddenly it's open range.

That's what's happened with this reel of footage from Epic demoing its engine. It's obviously been recorded at a briefing - you see the audience and can hear the host talking about the highlights of the video. But forget all that - the star is the engine.

And it's looking... wow.

This is what Epic's touting as waaaaay too heavy an engine for modern consoles to handle. A lot of folks are pointing at that comment as proof that a new console cycle is just around the corner. Or is an engine of this quality a sign that PC gaming is looking at an upswing soon?

What do you guys think?

yeah, looks very UE3 to me, particularly DM-Heatray. There's just higher levels of detail, and less of an obvious reliance on bump mapping.

The full 1080P uncompressed video can be found at Games.on.net, and cos it's an Aussie DL source, it will go as fast as possible
