Sony PSP Go goes bye-bye

It struggled right from the beginning, and now Sony have put the portable gaming device out of its misery once and for all...

Not too long after we brought you news that the PSP was still around, it seems that Sony has pulled the pin on its little brother, the PSP Go, with the announcement that production of the portable has stopped.

The Go, released back in October of 2009, probably cost a little more than it should have, and didn’t have the UMD drive of the original PSP, which not only bewildered many of us but had EB Games not even bothering to stock the unit on release.

Suffice to say, it wasn’t the success story Sony may have been hoping for, and today it goes to the great gaming console in the sky, according to Gamespy – who have linked to this statement on Japanese site AV Watch (you might need a translator for that one). Rest in peace, odd little portable device.

Sony will instead be focusing on the PSP-3000, which they are still manufacturing, and getting the NGP off the ground.  Hopefully, that will have a longer, more successful existence...

If they want a quick buck, release a firmware update for the PSP fat and slim that doesn't hinder homebrew.

Dumbasses.

Such a stupid move from Sony to release this, but they're KNOWN for screwing shit like this up.

Shame really, with the right marketing and support, a device such as this could indeed succeed.

If they made things backward compatible, it'd really help get new customers from their older products ... but they don't learn.

The short version is Sony made a huge mistake in trying to go UMd free and online delivered content only mid generation without it being backwards compatible with old purchases. Meaning current PSP owners had literally nothing to gain by upgrading to a GO. Couple that with the fact that not all the titles were available online so it isn't even that appealing to new investors into the hand held market.
Such a step into all online content should happen with new hardware.

Was there actually anything worth buying it for? I recall both PSPs being way too expensive, with very little in the way of interesting games that would justify the price.

Apparently it's just for Japan; SCEA is reporting they'll be continuing production of the Go model, for their yanky doodle dandy market.

That seems surprising, it must be selling well in the US.

PSP Go should've been a phone. It would have kicked arse if it was.
