A short burst of linky fun to finish off a short week. This week, we’ve got heaps of Game of Thrones reaction, Doctor Who and, of course, Skynet.
You’d have to have been living under a rock for the past while not to know that Game of Thrones, HBO’s much-hyped adaptation of George RR Martin’s fantasy classic, finally hit US screens last weekend. Obviously, given it’s already been renewed for a second season, it did plenty well in the ratings.
But what did everyone think of it? Well, apparently someone at the New York Times used it as an opportunity to deny the existence of female geeks (ha!), to which Newsarama had to say this.
On the actual topic of the show itself, there were plenty of people wondering whether it was the kind of adaptation where you needed a lot of background, or whether newbies would be able to get into it too. This article attempts to address those concerns.
And, of course, it wouldn’t be Game of Thrones week without someone behind the scenes getting in hot water. And who better than George RR Martin himself, taking a potshot at the ending of Lost. Admittedly, we never got into Lost, so we’ve only got popular opinion to guide us, but that popular opinion seems to indicate Martin may have a point…
In non GoT news, this week saw the upcoming adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies get a new director. We’re still not sure this will be worth seeing for anything but the novelty factor, but that’s probably going to be enough for most zombie freaks out there.
The upcoming animated Batman: Year One adaptation is also getting a fair bit of buzz, with the announcement of more of its voice cast. It’s now aiming to appeal to anyone who has ever enjoyed Breaking Bad, Buffy, Battlestar Gallactica or The OC. That should get most people, shouldn’t it?
Given the patchy history of Stephen King adaptations, there’s a fair bit of concern out there for the upcoming Dark Tower project. Den of Geek has a round-up of ten things that they would like to see in the movie, in case any of the producers are reading...
Anyone self-respecting Terminator fan will be aware that Skynet – if it does indeed exist – has now become self-aware. But what does this actually mean for humanity? Well, nothing yet – as far as we can tell – but we make no guarantees about what’s coming this weekend.
And finally, it’s a sad week for Doctor Who fans, with news that Elisabeth Sladen, who played possibly the most famous and beloved companion of the series, Sarah Jane, passed away this week. She will be missed.
