Sony apologises, 10 million credit cards exposed

The dust is settling on the Sony Playstation hack, but an apology and renewed service won't help at least 10 million customers...

Man - how do you come back from admitting that nearly 80 million customers have had their private details compromised in what is shaping up to be the biggest data breach of all time? If you're Sony's executive deputy president, Kaz Harai, you say sorry up front and deliver a number one bow.

The kind of bow that pretty much says, as only full Japanese courtesy can dictate, we messed up.

On top of that, Sony's also come up with a compensation package for affected customers - 30 days free access to the Qriocity music and service and the PlayStation Plus service. And for those 10 million customers that Sony's admitted have had their credit card details compromised, it'll offer credit card protection services.

But is that enough?

What gets most people is the fact that Sony knew about the hack, but decided to inform the public a full week after it happened.

I doubt they wanted to rush out and say "we've lost everyone's shit" when they weren't even sure if that was the case.

I don't have a credit card, and I don't have it online.

Hopefully this will scare developers into producing hard copy DLC's. Or.... allowing one to use PayPal... which gives buyers protection. Or even allowing me to buy and download on my PC, and then transfer to the PS3 via thumb drive.

It's still a really bad breach of privacy. And I think Sony can be held liable for anything done with users information without their consent.

Really there isn't much Sony could do that would be enough. They have to take it on the chin as far as the backlash from their user base and be as open as possible with details of the situation.
Yea Orcone i really think you are right, their delay in telling us was likely because they weren't sure themselves the extent of the breach.

Not that it makes it acceptable but Sony were victims in this as well and as much as we expect them to keep our information confidential your credit card info and personal details are the individuals responsibility every time you hand them over to a company you accept that you are exposing yourself to some degree of risk.

Or at least Yubitsume - Lays down a small clean cloth and the person performing the ritual lays their hand onto the cloth facing down. Using an extremely sharp knife or tanto, the person cuts off the portion of his left little finger above the top knuckle on the finger or the tip of the finger. He then wraps the severed portion in the cloth his hand was resting on and submits the "package" very graciously to the public on TV.
