"Star Wars: The Complete Saga" revealed on Blu-ray

But is it really complete? Only our frothing Star Wars fanboy can uncover the truth, using only his affinity with the Force...

Yesterday, as most of you know, was Star Wars day, and to celebrate the occasion Lucasfilm released the details of what is to be expected in the highly anticipated upcoming Blu-ray releases of the films.

That is, of course, if you were lucky enough to get into the site when the countdown reached 00:00:00 (at 11pm AEST). All I got was a white screen of death, followed by php mysql errors, followed by redirects to foxmovies.com. It became stable after about an hour, but by then dozens of users who managed to get in were thoughtful enough to post the details on their blogs.

Also revealed was the cover art of both the "complete" edition (see top-right), as well as the boxarts for each respective trilogy (next page). Personally, despite the individual trilogies re-using the same publicity shots as always, they look FAR superior to the pretty disappointing looking complete saga edition. I can understand that it's trying to represent the beginning of both Anakin's and Luke's journeys, but it just doesn't do it for me.

Now then... focussing on the complete collection which has all the special features (buying just the trilogies will only get you the movies), if you want to claim "completeness", you have to compare the boxset to the ridiculously comprehensive Alien Anthology, which has every version of each film, massive new documentaries on each, as well as everything (promos, docos, etc) ever previously released on the saga.

That's how you do it.

So what do we get with this?

It looks like we're only getting the 2004 DVD versions, which really was to be expected (probably with some more additions like - hopefully - CG Yoda in The Phantom Menace), as well as some new sound remixes. So looks like we'll probably be stuck with Greedo shooting first (although it's more about the same time now) and Hayden Christensen being totally out of place in Return of the Jedi.

You'd think with the branching technology we could/should get ALL versions of the films, including the originals, the 1997 editions, the 2004 editions, and now the 2011 editions. Having the options for all these versions would definitely increase sales even moreso.

No doubt, the picture and sound quality should be outstanding. Star Wars releases usually are of the highest quality. However, despite that, my number one concern is that they fix some of the video and sound issues from the recent DVD releases. If you're not sure what I mean... have a look at this...

Original

2004

Yep... looks great, doesn't it? The original trilogy DVD releases were plagued with lightsaber problems, with Luke's lightsaber being green(!) in A New Hope, Vader's changing between pink, orange & red constantly between shots, and pretty much every other lightsaber shot looking dodgy.

Also on the wishlist is that they fix the sound mixes, which apparently they are. When the rebels first attack the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin (in A New Hope), a great rendition of the Rebel Fanfare used to pump through the speakers as they swooped down to begin their attack. Emotional stuff. What do the current versions do? Well, all you hear is the sound of the X-Wings and the music is pretty much inaudible. Lucasfilm claimed that was "by design", but there were reports that some European versions had the original version in there.

Special features thoughts and full boxset details on the next page...

I like the box art for the separate original and prequel series, the complete saga box art though... quite bland. For something as epic as star wars it's a let down.

I might get the two series box sets personally. Likely cheaper and I'm not so much a fan that I'll watch all the docos and commentaries that run longer than the films themselves!

I've had my pre-order in on Amazon since last year, but I cancelled it and moved it over to JB Hi-fi a couple months back.

Definitely 9-disc set for me. I'm an extras whore.

^^+1 and is it just be or does the orginal look better then the 2004 version of the lighsaber shot?

which version depends on the prices.....but the complete saga looks like the one worth getting!

I think they've been labelled incorrectly.

They actually fixed the error that Luke's lightsaber is on the wrong side (in older versions his blade actually closest to the Emperor, making the stand-off completely pointless).

As for price, you're looking at $69.98 for the two "Trilogy" sets and $139 for the "Complete Saga" (via jbhifionline.com.au)

They've definitely been labelled correctly. The point I was trying to make with the screen comparison was the absolutely shocking colours of the lightsabers and Luke's saber being broken in half for some reason.

Watch any saber duel from the OT on DVD and you'll notice colour changes between just about every shot. And if you haven't seen them before now... sorry for ruining it for you :)

Here's a nice link full of stuffups from the DVD releases:

Yeah, you're right. They are labelled correctly.

I could've sworn they'd fixed Luke's blade being closest...or maybe I'm attributing the stuff-up to the earlier print.

Look I am a massive Star Wars fan. And ordinarily I would jump at this. i have purchsed the Star wars movies on pretty much every format they have ever been released on over the years.

But this time I will be holding back and checking what the quality of the picture and sound is like because to be honest, on my 56" LCD with a bit of upscaling the DVD versions dont look too bad.

If its the thumbs up then yes it will be a go.

why is there a red line of lightsaber going through the green one in the 2004 version? the red one is supposed to be behind the green one - the original makes more sense to me.

If you haven't already, check out Mr Plinkett's extremely in-depth, but weird, reviews of Episodes 1 to 3. I was actually pretty forgiving of those movies until I watched these reviews - they are VERY interesting and humorous!
