The long-awaited, feared to be vapourware, Aliens: Colonial Marines gets a launch date, and a reveal at the upcoming E3 show in Los Angeles next week. Hoo-AH!
The on-again, off-again rocky road of development that Aliens: Colonial Marines is on finally has an end in sight. SEGA announced today that the game will not only be shown off in all its Xenomorph glory at E3 next week, but also now has a more solid release date.
We can expect to be laying down a suppressing fire with the flame units and falling back by squads to the APC Spring of next year.
About damn time!
“To Gearbox Software and its peers throughout the industry, Aliens is one of the most influential science fiction properties of all time,” said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software. “Aliens: Colonial Marines, designed as an interactive successor to the landmark films from Twentieth Century Fox, is a dream project about which our studio is deeply committed and passionate.”
We're downloading a trailer as we speak - wheeee! - but for now, here's what we know. The game's coming on all major platforms, and Gearbox and SEGA are partnering with Twentieth Century Fox to make this a true sequel to the film. It's also going to focus on co-operative gameplay - we can only wonder what the impact of newer shooters like Left 4 Dead have had on the game's production.
The game starts on the Sulaco (one of the coolest ships in sci-fi history), found in orbit around LV426. Players take on the role of Colonial Marines sent aboard to find out what happened to ship and crew, and uncover a vast plot. The game will feature shipboard environments, as well as locations on the surface of the forsaken planet.
Interestingly, it sounds like the game is ignoring the cannon of the third Aliens film. Stay tuned for a trailer later today, and keep an eye on the site next week for our impressions of the game as revealed at E3.
