Another week, another dose of links. This week: Doctor Who, Wolverine, Muppets, Greenpeace and more...
There’s been a lot of discussion this week about whether everyone’s favourite time lord is in trouble, or whether the decision to split the next season of Doctor Who across 2012 and 2013 is more to do with the Doctors 50th Anniversary or Steven Moffat’s Sherlock commitments (which the man himself has denied on ye olde twitter). In any case, we may have a long wait ahead of us…
In less overwrought happenings, this week some of our favourite childhood characters got themselves some internet airtime, first in the form of the Sesame Street gang poking a bit of fun at the ongoing saga that is the Spiderman musical, and then the Muppets got in on the act with their take on the Green Lantern. Good times, internet. Good times.
The internet has also blessed us with a clip from the upcoming Futurama season opener, for which we are quietly grateful. No longer is this show some sort of redheaded stepchild to The Simpsons – and while that may have more to do with the decline of The Simpsons than with the rise of Futurama, it’s still about time.
Finally on ‘things the internet is good for’, some of us around here really love it when we see someone identify a problem in the world and go about harnessing all that webby power in an attempt to solve it – especially when they do it in an entertaining way, just like Greenpeace have with this message from Ken to Barbie and her makers at Mattel. Tell em, Ken!
In movie news, it looks like Darren Aronofsky has finally been replaced as director of The Wolverine. The new guy is one James Mangold, who has a rather… varied list of directorial credits, including everything from Meg Ryan romcoms to biopics to Tom Cruise blockbusters. We’ll be keeping an eye on his this one plays out…
Also making the papers is the news that Russell Crowe will be playing Superman’s dad in the upcoming franchise reboot. *insert obligatory phone-throwing joke here*
Cowboys and Aliens is certainly generating a fair amount of buzz, and we’re chuffed to see that they’ve got a new trailer out to keep us all tingling with anticipation. They’ve also announced that the movie will be premiered at ComicCon, which may just be a cynical move to boost its geek credentials, but is still kind of cool!
And because a week can’t go by without news on another 80’s movie franchise being rebooted, remade or resurrected, we’ll leave you this week with an update on the status of the long-rumoured Ghostbusters 3. And lo! Here it is! Good news? Terrible news? Don’t care? Spend the weekend making up your mind and let us know on Monday.
