It's been a big week in the geek world, with plenty of Hobbitty happenings, Spidey sadness (sort of), and the usual Star Wars goings on...
The biggest thing getting the geek world all excited this week is the first lot of pics from the Hobbit set. There are only three of them – and they only feature Ian McKellen and Martin Freeman – but they’re still making us all very happy as we wait patiently for the film to hit cinemas… at the end of 2012. Disclaimer: anyone not fond of big hairy hobbit feet should perhaps not click on the link, as they are on display.
Comic Book folks, on the other hand, have been all abuzz with the news that Marvel have killed of Spiderman… sort of. More to the point, they’ve killed of Peter Parker… sort of… which, while still a big deal, isn’t quite as monumental. Here’s one take on what that all means from someone who probably understands it all better than we do.
Remember way, way back when, we pointed you to the schematics for the Millenium Falcon? Well, those of you who loved that are going to love Star Wars: The Blueprints, a limited edition coffee table book containing 200 blueprints and schematics for everything in the Star Wars galaxy. It’s so awesome it’s even got its own trailer.
Also looking suitably awesome is the upcoming Guillermo Del Toro project, Pacific Rim, now with added Idris Elba - that’s Stringer Bell to (hopefully) most of you - and Charlie Hunnan, best known for Sons of Anarchy. There will also be giant robot mechas battling aliens, so even if the cast or the director aren’t impressing you, that should be.
This weeks big trailer release is the theatrical trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger – a movie many are hoping will be far superior to The Green Lantern, which, based on its release in many parts of the world that aren’t Australia, isn’t really impressing anyone at all.
In other interesting news this week, William Gibson has told a high-end literary-type magazine all about how he came up with the term ‘Cyberspace’, as well as a whole lot of other fascinating stuff that fans will gobble up. Sadly, The Paris Review won’t give you an online freebie, but you can read an excerpt here, and then go buy it if you are so inclined…
And finally, this week saw the announcement of yet another Frankenstein movie – which the AV Club has calculated takes the number of Frankenstein projects in development to an impressive eight. And the studios wonder why people keep saying that Hollywood has run out of new idea…
