If you're a science fiction fan, this work in progress site is an essential bookmark. The Science Fiction Encyclopedia is now online.
Way back in the day, I used to work at Galaxy Bookshop in Sydney. For those not in the know, it's a science fiction specialist bookstore, and for three years I lost myself in the minutiae of the place, from ordering shiny new Enterprise D cutaway posters and TNG Uniform insignia, to meeting Robert Jordan before he died (and man, was he a sour bastard). While I was there, an epic hardcover came out that I bought right away, and still love to this day.
The Science Fiction Encyclopedia.
To call it a doorstop is an understatement, but the problem with a book like that is that it's out of date right away. I love my copy, but given that it's now over fifteen years old, it's not the good for the last few years of SF output.
Thankfully, the digital version of the Science Fiction Encyclopedia is now online, and while it's a beta version of the text, it's growing all the time and is packed with awesome (and awesomely geek) SF info.
