Classic strategy game maker Firaxis is working on an 'action strategy' re-imagining of the classic alien invasion game, XCOM.
There was a lot of buzz around the intertubes yesterday about how many minds were going to be blown by the latest big Game Informer cover reveal. Considering I still find it hard to believe that Obsidian's actually making a real, honest to Gods Southpark MMO, I was eager to see just how much more mindblowing things could get.
Well, with the announcement that strategy maestro Firaxis is well under way on a new XCOM strategy game is pretty up there. XCOM: Enemy Unknown = Mind: blown.
So this is two XCOM games that publisher 2K is working on, and while some feel that this new announcement is a reflexive response to lukewarm feelings over the XCOM, it's obvious that Firaxis has been working on this game for a lot longer than some naysayers think. So what can we expect?
Well, it's a classic turn-based strategy game, for one thing, so this really is your daddy's XCOM we're talking about. It's a whole new alien invasion, and you'll need to research tech, build your base, and of course pick and choose what missions to prosecute as you play. And it's coming on PC and console.
“It’s been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We’re huge fans of the original game and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM,” said Steve Martin, president of Firaxis Games, in a today's release. “We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise.”
Alpha Centauri is still one of our personal favourites of all time, so the idea of Firaxis taking on another of our all time favourites is just icing on a cake made of crack.
