If you've ever wanted to try Star Trek Online - and we recommend it - it'll soon be the perfect time, is it becomes free to play for all.
We got an awful lot of fun out Star Trek Online. It's not perfect, but it did deliver a fun and decidedly unique MMO experience that mixed starship combat and exploration with more familiar party-based, planet-side questing.
And, you know... getting to wear a Starfleet uniform is kinda keen.
The game was never a huge success, though, but we're hoping that's going to change with the game's move to the free-to-play model this monthm, on the 17th of January. You'll be able to download the game and get access to the entire galaxy of content for absolutely zero dollars, which is a pretty neat proposition. We went back to the game recently and it has had layers of polish added since release.
You'll also still be able to subscribe for cash-money, for which you'll get a mess of extra features like an expanded inventory and bonus promotion points. You can compare the free and paid experiences on the site.
Maybe it's time to take the USS Kalinin out of mothballs...
