Sleeping dogs is an open world cop drama set in Hong Kong. Sadly lacking in Chow Yun Fat, however.
Well here's a nice surprise - Square Enix London Studios and United Front Games have just lifted the lid on Sleeping Dogs, an open world action game set in Hong Kong. This is in fact the latest iteration of cancelled Activision game True Crime Hong Kong, given new life with Square.
Sleeping Dog's getting a release in the latter half of this year, and will be on console and PC. Sleeping Dogs sounds like a classic HK action film, translated into game form - you play as Wei Shen, an undercover cop investigating Triad gangs; there's betrayal, questions of loyalty, gunfights, brutal martial arts and thrilling car chases.
“From the moment you pick up the controller and experience the blend of driving, close combat and shooting you know you’re playing something fresh and a bit special,” said Lee Singleton, General Manager of Square Enix London Studios, in today's release. “Sleeping Dogs has one of the best melee combat systems out there – it’s super brutal with devastating takedown moves, and when added to UFG’s proven heritage in driving games, a first class story and the vibrant backdrop of the Hong Kong underworld we get a fiery recipe with fun written all over it.”
The hand to hand combat indeed sounds pretty detailed, with lots of combos and moves to employ, and environmental take downs that, frankly, make us worry about the game's chances with the classification board - those folks will probably frown at killing people with circular saws... Regardless, Sleeping Dogs sounds like a lot of fun. Check out our four new screenshots, and keep an eye peeled for a trailer later today.
