Come and get it!

Sony values the PS3 properly at last. It’s got to be... free-eeee!

Because we all love cheap things and freebies, we thought we’d tell you all about a thang we just heard Sony is running.

If you buy one of its 1080p XBR, X or W series HD displays (which are reasonably good) you get a free Playstation 3 (which are reasonably devoid of games). By PS3 we specifically mean the 40GB model which, if memory serves me correctly, goes for about $700 wing-wangs (Futurama for dollar*) right now. That translates to 23,787 Indian Rupees or 180,050 Zimbabwean whatever-the-Zimbabwean-currency-happens-to-be-calleds.*

You won’t get any free games with it, but hey, you can’t win ‘em all -- a point hammered home by the inclusion of a grand total of Zero Blu-ray movies. There’s more to talk about here, such as giant economies of scale involved with controlling the supply chain of hardware to software to content and the stupid and truly floral wording that press releases are infested with, but that’s for another time. At a time when I am awake*.

The thang starts tomorrow (the 21st) and ends on the 28th of January. More information will probably be available when Sony puts up what is presumably its promotional site. It's dangerous to go alone! Take this. (nah nah nah naaaah!!!*)

Naturally, as news goes down better when served with a side dish (or cake*) of controversy, let me end with:

Promotion..? Desperation..? You be the judge.

* Stupidity in this article is a direct consequence of starting Portal at 1:30 this morning and finishing a handful of hours later.
