It’s almost embarrassing. All sorts of embarrassing. First, it was embarrassing to see just how dumbed-down the graphics in Oblivion were. For this PC game in development for 4 years it was a shameful shame that in the last year or so the graphics were switched to compatibility mode for the 360 version. We had rose coloured glasses on when we first saw PC Oblivion, but really the graphics could have been so much better.
So next up was the embarrassing advantage PC owners had over 360 owners. Mods and tweaks started flowing in. Soon PC gamers were able to fix this wonderful game so it looked and played like the game it should always have been.
Lastly, there’s the embarrassment that the 360 really should have the graphics and CPU grunt to run it much better than it looks out of the box. But for some unfathomable reason it doesn’t.
We’re now super-interested to see how future 360 games shape up and if they really are stretching the legs of the 360, or, in fact, if this is the best the 360 can do.
Which, in a roundabout way, leads me to introduce the 3rd part of Ashton’s quite remarkable Oblivion tweak guide, linked below. This one has an enormous list of the very best mods out there. There are hundreds and that number grows everyday. Use this guide to home in on the very best, and make Oblivion your own personal masterpiece.
