Do not mistake the UV16 for a sunscreen SPF rating. More monitors in front of you means the exact opposite.

This is the EVGA UV16 display adapter. It's got a USB port on one end and a DVI connector on the other. Which is good news for anyone who wants to hang loads of monitors (under a 1680*1050 resolution) off their system after running out of old PCI video cards.

The hardware itself works as an interface bridge that makes your processor emulate a graphics card, then sends the output to the box via USB. Think software RAID or onboard sound cards and you're basically there. So yes, you will need the drivers and software that come on the disc with the UV Plus -- even under Vista.

Once you've installed the software and restarted, an option for an extra monitor with all the usual settings and options will appear in your display settings. An icon will appear in your tray that will give you all the options you can already get to through your display settings anyway, as well as screen rotation which is useful and cool if you can rotate your monitor 90 degrees.

Because the hardware design is constrained by the USB bus, there are no kinds of acceleration onboard and you should expect to see it chew up your system resources when you need it to render anything intensive to the monitor. We didn't have any issues playing back any format video, but there sure are bitrate constraints you'll have to take into account if you're planning to play back video on a monitor attached to the UV16.

Playing back a DVD (on an admittedly bloated system running Vista) yielded a dropped frame every few seconds in Media Player Classic and in VLC's full screen mode. 1:1 windowed playback in VLC was better, but still dropped an occasional frame. (NB: VLC is not an adequate substitute to learning about desktop video and how to install codecs properly.)

So what use is it? Hooking up an additional monitor to your laptop, or just getting a digital video signal out of it (I say thinking of my EeePC that I haven't used in weeks because the power supply's dead and I can't find my receipt) is a start.

But more interesting would be a monitor explosion on your desk, for fun and the side effect of making some programs easier to navigate. Spreading the many, many (many) panels that Adobe’s After Effects usually hides -- even on two 1920 * 1200 monitors -- over an image wall springs to mind. But the idea of going nuts with a Flight Sim cockpit and loads of monitors scattered everywhere will do it for some people.

It’s versatile and shiny, and if you consider $130 to be a good deal, you’re in business.

Recommended.

"VLC is not an adequate substitute to learning about desktop video and how to install codecs properly."

Sure, because I want an extra 5 background processes running on my computer all the time. I want to install ad-littered programs like RealMedia and Quicktime, or their 'Alternative' versions so they can NOT WORK. I want VobSub, Quicktime, Matroska and FLAC tray icons taking up start bar real estate. Totally.

Does it work with SLi?
I have been interested in it, but have not researched it as I have no free monitor at the moment.
My ideal situation is to have a spare smaller LCD than my 24" running for msn, and appz like temps etc.
Most of this can be displayed anyway on the g15 keyboard. but not msn.

Bit of a pain with SLi when you want to play a network game over net with friends and have some bugs to sort out.
This could be the god send for that scenario.

At $130 IMHO you'd be better off just getting another video card. So unless you've run out of PCI slots (as the article does say) it seems rather pointless.

RE: HSV Guy
Pricing does seem a little high for Australia, so we will work with partners to address this.
Note: you can add up to 6 UV Plus to display an additional 6 monitors with DVI interface. Laptop or Desktop :)

maxamatosis, are you sure you understand what a codec is, and how it works? Or, for that matter, what 'hidden icons' are in a system tray?

If something is going to be running on my system, then there should be a reason for them to run. The retarded codec configuration apps that install themselves as startup tray icons despite me wanting to touch them perhaps once in their entire existence, I call them wasteful.

'Hide inactive icons' is that setting that makes the bottom right of my task bar resize randomly and hide applications that I want to see unless I specifically tell them not to on an app by app basis? Yeah I know that one. About as useful as the 'Group similar taskbar icons together' setting.

As for codecs, considering I'm not encoding video: all they are to me are half a dozen or more apps I need to install when there's already a program out there that does an identical job. Not to mention VLC has an interface on par with Media Player Classic, both of which infinitely better than the unintuative bullshit of programs like WMP, WinAmp, Real, Qicktime and all the crap that giant multinationals push on the status quo.

Now I've given a handful of reasons to use VLC. Give me a few reasons to install codecs and use them with another media player. You can skip on the subtitles formatting one. I don't need Anime with pretty pink Comic Sans running vertically accros the middle of my screen. White with a black outline works great for me.

I just found the EVGA UV Plus+ ( MPN: 100-U2-UV16-A1 ) a few weeks ago and wrote a review of it. I liked it a lot but found a few problems you should be aware of.
