NRG's latest sports the new Phenom II... and it's fast.

Just before Xmas we got a to spend an all too brief amount of time with the latest NRG system to hit the shelves - the Game Ultra. It's your classic NRG system - beautiful cabling, water-cooled, wonderfully lit - but it's also worth mentioning because it sports the new AMD Phenom II 940 processor.

Here's the specs for this beast:
AMD Phenom II 940 (overclocked to 3.88GHz)
Alphacool Watercooling kit
DFI DK790FXB-M2RSH motherboard
4GB Corsair Dominator DDR2 RAM @ 1066MHz
2x HIS HD4870X2 2GB graphics card
2x 1TB Samsung hard drives in RAID 0
Sony Blu-ray writer optical drive
Antec TPQ 1000 power supply
Antec 1200 case
Vista Home Ultimate 64-bit

And all that will set you back $5,199.

To whet your appetite, we've even got some quick benchmarks:

why does it look like 2 cards in crossfire in the pic?

nice rig, btw.. would still DIY but its a good benchmark to compare to your own efforts i guess

I laughed when I saw those benchmarks, my e8600 (when i had it) and 2 4870 single cores got 20300 3dmarks and the same 2 cards and an i7 920 at 3.2ghz got 17000 on vantage.

so $5000 for what? something that can be beaten by in the 1st instance a $1500 machine and in the second instance by a slightly upgraded version of that same machine.

$5000 AUD is alot but the machine is pretty decent, only problem is most modern games and benchmarks dont make proper use of all the 4 gpu's.

Plus i dont even think the CPU can transfer enough data to make it worth while.

But when you add in building costs (man hours) and things like that i can understand the price. Of course you get a warranty so if shit hits the fan someone else fix's it for you.

For me, i would build my own, but for those less confident i guess you could justify it!

**Very nice machine though!

Smakme, I think you're absolutely bang on. Every opportunity we get, we tell people that it's always going to be *drastically* cheaper to build your own system. For many Atomicans, support isn't an issue, either, so the DIY option is the best. But not everyone is an enthusiast (yet), so for some the value of that warranty, the great build, and stable overclock pre-sale is very much worth it.

yea but for $5000 I would expect at least an i7 920 in that machine.

You ought to see what they sell their i7 machines for...

I recently got a NRG Typhoon /w E8400 (o/c'd to 4ghz, 4gig ram, 4870 512meg) for a relative of mine. I have always built my own pc's for myself (current rig is o/c'd i7 920) but i didnt want the hastle of having to provide 'customer support' for my uncle. So for $1855 with a guaranteed overclock (no screen, keyboard or mouse - but included vista home premium 64) i am very happy with it.
