Microsoft Sidewinder X8 Wireless Gaming Mouse

Verdict:
We’re ditching our X5 in favour of the X8 – ‘nuff said.

Why hasn’t anyone else thought of this?!? Well done Microsoft and viva la X8!

It really galls us to say this, but we have a soft spot for Microsoft's latest range of gaming peripherals. We were very fond of the X5 mouse and X6 keyboard, but this new mouse goes one step further and actually brings some true innovation to wireless peripherals.

One of the real issues with using a wireless product when you're gaming is dealing with it when it runs out of charge or the batteries die. It's usually a pretty solid brick wall, stopping your experience dead and leading to grief and the gnashing of teeth (hey, we love our gaming!). But Microsoft - and we don't say this often, so enjoy it - has outdone itself to come up with an elegant solution to the problem. Magnets!

The X8 (gallery here) features a base station like many wireless products, that plugs into your PC's USB port, and deals with the fiddly process of beaming signals from your PC to your mouse. But that's not the only cable snaking from it - there's a mouse cable that ends in a magnetised adapter. It's designed in such a way that at the first signs of trouble you can simply tap it with your mouse and it'll attach, correctly, first time every time.

It is, simply put, brilliant.

The mouse itself combines the best features of the X5 and previous MS mice. It's well weighted, erring on the heavier side of things, which suits us just fine. It's technically bigger than the X5, but, oddly, feels smaller. We think it's the subtle differences in the curves, allowing you to grasp the mouse with thumb and ring finger just about perfectly. It has on-the-fly DPI switching (which you can adjust in the mouse's settings on your PC), well placed thumb buttons that improve on the X5 as well, and all seven of the buttons (the scroll wheel tilts left and right also) are programmable.

The placement of the laser is a little odd, though. It's slightly off-center from most other mice, which leads to an initial feeling that the X8 is simply not that accurate. However, with continued use you quite quickly get used to this, and the mouse is as responsive and accurate as you could want.

We still think the X5 wins on scroll-wheel performance, but the X8's metal wheel is certainly more responsive than previous MS attempts. And, impressively, it's still in the $100 range. For the ease of use of the magnetic cord, and solid and precise wireless performance, this is a mouse we love - with no reservations.

whats the point of a wireless mouse if its going to be wired half the time?

The point is so you can use it when the batteries are dead Doofus

<_<

Isn't it about time that they (THE companies) came up with a self powering mouse? Therefore it could be TRUE wireless. Surely Kinetic tech used in watches and the like would be ok for powering a mouse? I suppose that relies on it getting a fairly consistent source of movement energy to keep it going, so in long periods of no movement (watching a movie) it could run outa batts. Or a mouse with an induction pad would be great, you'ld just have to keep your credit cards and floppy disks away from it.

I bought one of these cos i got sick of trying to find a cheap G7 and i love it.
I also was shocked at how long the batteries last! My friend has a g7 and he changes batteries at least once every gaming day usually twice. But with this mouse I charged it for a couple of hours when i first got it (While still using it) Then didn't charge it again for over a week! I use my computer for a couple of hours everyday at least and while I didn't do much gaming that week it was still more than the 10 hours that they are supposed to last!

oh nice, this might just be the next mouse for me.. i for one do get sick of swapping the battery out on my G7, which usually dies at the most inconvenient of times and the sleep function is beginning to fail. :(

Anyone heard of the Razer Mamba? Wireless gaming mouse, same concept of where you can plug it in to charge and game at the same time...except Razer did it before Microsoft...

I've only ever seen one similar mouse, but he X8 has a lot more features.

I always wondered why there weren't many mice like that, that were wireless, and could be charged and used by plugging a cable in. On my desk I don't really need a wireless, but if I wanted to be totally unrestricted, I could just unplug (such as when gaming)

Now to find $100+ to buy one...

SCARECROW, we have the Mamba, but it was released here (and delivered to us) well after we got the X8. The Mamba is looking good so far, but I think it's going to have a hard slog to pry the X8 off my home system :)

And cerby, yeah, I'm amazed at the battery time on the X8. It's simply superb.

Hawkeye: Since the mamba is design wise the upgrade to the death adder, I'd love it if you could give a comparison between the two in the review.

I knew Microsoft would bring something out like this as they have "teamed" up with RAZER this sounds like it could be the RAZER MAMBA technology if so Microsoft didn't develope the technology Razer did. (See http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-mice/razer-mamba/)

and it also looks like the Mamba as well. " Well done Microsoft re branding other technology as your own. As this technology was developed by Razer.

Um, it really doesn't look like the Mamba. I have a Mamba here (and I will do that comparison asked for), and it looks and feels completely different.

On early use, the X8 wins hands down, to my mind.

What's the clickiness on the X8 wheel like? Proper clicky, or is it that horrible smooth scroll on the later Explorers?

Also, how many buttons does this Mamba have, and what is its clickiness like?

Now that I have my second Trackball Explorer, it's time to start considering which wireless wireable mouse I'll lay my hands on and gut to stuff into said Tracky...

I just buy a mouse that works whenever I need it to work and doesn't look like something out of starship enterprise or (namely the microsoft X gaming products).

Pretty sure the magnetised power cable has been done in MacBooks... MS is a little behind on that one...

Yeah i have to admit that the pictures i saw before buying it showed grazy lights and blue glow everywhere, but the truth is the lights turn off like 10 seconds after you change Dpi or turn it on and you can't see the blow glow until you put your eye over the hole (which i have done :P )
In regards to the Mamba I searched for ages for a rechargeable wireless mouse with higher dpi and all i could find for a long time was the logitech then the X8 came out but i couldn't find anything from razer at all. I searched through reviews, new release stuff and the razer site a fair few times and couldn't even find any news about developing a decent wireless mouse right up till when i bought the X8. I just assumed that because of the very vocal group of people who stick to the "can't use wireless for gaming cos it's evil" stigma all the manufacturers had decided it wouldn't make a profit.

Ok i finnally got this mouse because the Roccat Kone was sold out at MSY. Not bad but not for everybody. There is flaws. If you hod the mouse too heavily the mouse's top will rise because of crap product design which needs a weight system. intellipoint macro software isnt that fabulous. Blue track senser is too strong for some mousepads. Some buttons are redundant. (including a turn on button wtf?) Although it does get the job done.
