Verdict:
Won’t set the world on fire, but it’s not bad either.

See the amazing jumping 5V rail! Huntkey tries to deliver the power, but just doesn't quite get there.

When you sit down to start piecing together a brand-new rig, the temptation to skimp on a few parts can be pretty strong. You might be browsing through cases online, and odds are that you'll see a few that come with a power supply - a whole unit, practically for nothing! Well, it turns out that there's a reason they can include a PSU with a case for a grand total of eighty bucks: both are generally shoddy quality and destined to explode with only the slightest encouragement. And that's if you're lucky!

Thankfully it seems you don't have to spend a huge sum of cash to get a decent unit, and the Huntkey Jumper 550W on display sits smack-bang in the middle of the Antec and Coolermaster competition. As its name suggests, it is rated by Huntkey for 550W, though it boasts the ability to supply up to 648W through the four 12V rails rated at 16A, 16A, 14A and 8A. It's also only certified for 80PLUS, with an average of 82 per cent efficiency.

The included cables are mainly modular, though they are quite short in length and are appropriate for smaller ATX builds. There are six peripheral cables offering SATA and molex, but only four sockets to plug them into, offering a nice amount of choice. There's also enough PCIe connectors to run two decently-powerful graphics cards or a single high-end card.

We loaded the Jumper up with a workload and threw our multimeters at it, returning 12.153V and a concerning 4.4060V on the 12V and 5V rails respectively. There didn't appear to be any instability on the 12V rail, even though the 5V rail idled at anywhere from 4.6V to 4.75V, seemingly bouncing around at random. In all, the Jumper 550W is a decently priced unit that can power a mid-range system, and though we'd prefer a little more efficiency, it is certainly far better than a cheap bundled unit.

I'm not a fan of Huntkey 550Wers, thanks to a couple of reviews over at hardwaresecrets. Their V-Power and Green 550Wers are basically the same PSU, and neither can deliver 550W reliably, both blowing up when you try to do so.

How does a PSU that's got a rail out by 12% (the standard fail level being 5%) get a 79% rating?

Is this the same unit as is reviewed here?

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/989

Knowing the equpiment and methods used to test power supplies by Hardware Secrets, and given that it was given their highest award, I personally would not think twice about using it in my system.

Looking at this: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Huntkey-Jumper-550-Power-Supply-Review/989/7 there doesn't seem to be any issue with the 5v rail or efficieny in general.

I've got nothing against Atomic reviews, but I'm not sure the title and introduction to this review are warranted.

Still, I guess it is possible your review unit had some issues that the Hardware Secrets one didn't have.

Thanks for the review though! :-)

Thanks for the link bnew, I wasn't aware of their review of this model.

It's good to see it fares well under Gabriel's scrutiny.

I'm very curious as to the load and method of measurement of the 5V rail now, as Gabriel's fail level is an even lower than standard 3%.

No worries. I was only aware if it myself because when I was recently building a system I created a shortlist of decent, ~500w units with modular cables. I saw the Huntkey on PCCG and naturally went looking for reviews.

The only reason I didn't get it was I ended up ordering the parts elsewhere and they didn't stock it.

As we always say, we can only review the gear we get in - and you'd be surprised the amount of different you can get between seeming identical PC hardware :)

Yup, understood (and mentioned in my first post).

Just wanted people to be aware of the Hardware Secrets review. The real question is whether the differences in this case are down to the units tested, the method of testing or the gear used to perform the testing. Hell, it could even be a combination of all three!

Like you say though, even 'identical' parts can be different. The review I linked was from 4 months ago, so its entirely possible (for example) that some of the internal components of the unit have changed.

And I'm almost certain that different methods will show different results :)

While I'd agree with that, that's a massive discrepency that could only be explained by a fault in either the PSU or the measuring.

You don't feel like tearing it apart and checking whether the internals are the same as the hardwaresecrets one? Garn, you know you want to!

It's already been sent back to the supplier, I think...
