Final Fantasy XIV - the game that sucks and blows

Verdict:
Definitely a fantasy too far.

I didnt even last the free 30 days!!! - GeordieDownUnder

Quite possibly the most impenetrable - and least entertaining - game you’ll play this year. This is literally one Fantasy too far.

There’s a school of thought that says MMOs, especially as typified by the World of Warcraft model, are too easy. That they’re by and large tailored for the lowest common denominator, lack complexity, and don’t deliver nearly enough challenge or gameplay complexity.

These are the kinds of gamers who no doubt look at a game like Final Fantasy XIV and think “Eureka! A game with a proper learning curve!” But even the most ardent WoW-hater, the most vocal of those looking for a challenge instead of a grind would weep at the utter inane complexity of FFXIV.

And that’s before you even get into the fucking game.

Epic account fail
To say that FFXIV is an impenetrable mess is an insult to other impenetrable messes, and the lack of transparency begins before you even get playing. FFXI had a similarly problematic account and payment system, but the masterminds behind XIV seem to be even more actively making sure people never play their game.

For instance, not only do you need to sign up for an account, you then need to create a sub-account for your payment options, and then sign up for an external service that takes care of credit card deductions. That’s three accounts, for one game! What’s worse, even using the manual as a guide – surely a bad sign – it’s still a confusing and often bewildering process. For instance, what do you think this phrase means:

"To create characters on your FINAL FANTASY XIV service account, you must possess automatically continuous options."

What is that... I don’t even, as the kids say these days. However, it’s also typical of the entire painful process. Sadly, however, we were able to work it all out eventually. In many ways, we should have just learnt our lesson from the account process.

Epic gaming fail
After a more or less baffling but suitably epic cinematic intro, the game gets down to character creation. It’s pretty deep as such things go, sitting somewhere in between the hyper-basic options of WoW, and the hyper-detailed options in Age of Conan (does anyone still play that?). However, it too gets quickly annoying; once you choose your voice type, for instance, your fledgling toon starts to sign off from every finalised option with a laugh that can be best described as... scary. Not to mention annoying.

In fact, by the time we were finished creating our faux-elf (you can call them Elezen, but if they’re tall and pointy-eared, they’re an elf) blacksmith we kinda hated the chuckling jerk.

But that does touch on one of the few things we were impressed with in FFXIV – the class system. From the get-go, not only can you sign up for any of classic melee, ranged or spell-using classes, but you can also take a crafting class. Even more impressive, class is a mutable thing, depending more on how you’re equipped than any mere job description.

That, however, was about the last thing we were impressed by.

After another cinematic, and a brief fight – where your best attack is throwing stones?! – you find yourself in whatever starting city you’ve chosen. If you’re a habitual MMO player, you know what to look for: a quest giver or something similar, something to give your game experience a bit of direction; except, in FFXIV, direction seems to be something that didn’t make it into the final build.

Instead, you’re left with the lingering feeling that you’re missing something obvious, that only if you look a little hard will things start making sense. But that realisation never occurs. Instead you stumble about looking for quests or at least things to do, while trying to work out who are players and who’re NPCs. When you do get a reason to leave the city, the open environs are large and pretty, but largely empty. Sure, the boar-heavy stock of most MMOs is probably over the top, but where’s the fun in wandering through an empty landscape, to find a quest hub lacking quests?

As to combat, it’s a poorly timed exercise that seems to have no relation to what you’re seeing on screen, making the timing of abilities problematic at best.

The truth is we’d been looking forward to something a bit meatier than your average MMO. Final Fantasy XIV, however, is huge mouthful of poor game mechanics, unfriendly UIs, and aimless storytelling – one that’s more likely to choke any optimism for the game right out of you.

After playing it for a month myself I'd have to agree with this rating. Learning curves can only be overcome by providing instruction and this game does not do that at all.
Once you've browsed the websites for what your supposed to do, where you're supposed to go ect the games mechanics and abysmal UI just suck all the fun out of the crafting and quests.

Maybe its because it's a PS3 game aswell but I just didn't find it to be any fun at all. Trying to hold on while they fix the game was just to boring.

On that note though there is this : http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com/pl/topics/detail?id=c499e4c5df4f3f0fde1fb47a28574cb9c3991c9f

An apology and a plan put into action to help fix the game.

Well, that's something... but I can't say I'm at all convinced they can pull it off.

And man - you must have incredible stamina to stick with this steaming pile for so damn long!

I left Final Fantasy a long time ago. And if I ever felt like playing it again. I'd dig up number 10 or number 7.

I'll be a honest FF fan, out of all the FF games that have been released, the best ones have been on Console. 11 and 14, not my type, never have, and never will play it.

Should be mentioned, that this has been such a fail, that not only SE is completely restructuring the dev team behind... They are also making it free to play till they get their shit sorted out.

PS3 version is delayed till the PC version is in a satisfactory state.

MMO Rpgs are all mostly fail, As it's all Weapon Based mods that make all the difference so you've lost control and have to submit to the PLAIN JANE CHARACTER TEMPLATES no longer can you mold a character and misuse points into dex so you get some rolling wizard, I miss Characters that can be naked and totaly just beat your face in because everypoint went into Strength and Vitality, But if a nuking naked sorc with Intel and Wisdom comes along and gets his ranged nuke on a Hercules its all over for him then naked ranger appears from no where shoots the sorc in the face with his bow and poison at its all over for sorc low health DPS then a freaking druid turns up wraps up the ranger in vines and turns into a massive bear and eats the rangers head, But all of these games have a CRAPPY player template.

And SW TOR looks like its going to be AFTERBURNER/SIMS, EA will no doub't fire all staff after the creation process is complete, And we will all Praise Ea for their wise Decision not receieve any patch unless its the usual EA placebo .exe that comes with a README.txt filled with LIES and Links to drive pages.

perhaps you should play a classless MMORPG, like runescape.

I hope nobody is trying to defend this game, there is absolutely no excuses for this at all. I remember back in 2008 picking up a Playstation Magazine, reading about SE's new MMO in the works. It didn't sound as if it were going to be another Final Fantasy, but I figured it would be.. The article went on and on, about how the developers learned from their mistakes in XI, and wanted to release an MMO unlike any other MMO to be released...

Fast forward to 2009 where we find out this MMO is indeed Final Fantasy XIV... They talked about how it will set the path on how MMO's today will be done *laughs*.

We see the trailers, and the little updates... Looks quite promising.. Looks exciting, as a Fan of the FF series since 1, for NES, and a FFXI Vet I was quite excited to check this game out... Finally the Alpha and then Beta.. Didn't hear much promising reviews, but I thought to myself its the Alpha people chill.. Then its was "Its the Beta people chill".. RELEASE DAY... HORRIBLE reviews but I wanted to give it a try for myself, I can't go by what others say.

Absolutely beautiful game, if anything they certainly created the most beautiful MMO ever.. But the game started to pretty much be that really hot chick you see.. Though when you go to speak with her you find out she's got nothing going for her really... Where do I begin with the mistakes with this game?

1. The crafting.. Crafting is actually a bit more fun in this one over XI... Unfortunately it feels like they force you to do crafting. It almost feels more like a job than a game many times, which then leads me to talk about the next mistake which made crafting more of a pain..

2. Lack of an Auction House.. Who in the world thought that removing the Auction House would be a good idea? Their reasoning was because they wanted players to interact with each other more.. BS, there was more interaction among players in XI at least that's what I experienced.. Then of course they wanted to protect it from the RMT's.. News flash, you're never going to rid MMO's from RMT's so get over it. Doing all this crap to combat them, makes the game very less enjoyable for the people you are asking to pay a subscription fee for.

I then find myself spending literary an hour and half looking for the materials I need to craft one bloody thing! Only to find out that the retainer I am looking for which I saw listed as online on Yellowgremlin... Is in fact offline... Only to find the other one I saw with the item I'm looking... No longer having it. SURPRISE! You have now not only wasted time, but you've also wasted anima.

So my brother gets on the game, He has his character from Uldah since he likes the way it looks, mine from Limsa.. After crafting him a nice robe for his mage I wish to give it to him.. Do I send it to his mailbox where he can pick it up and enjoy the boost of powers from the robe his bro put together for him? Of course not, I have to spend more anima to teleport to his city and then run to his location to give him one bloody item -_- Who was the genius who thought this would be a good idea?

3. Battles! I do enjoy the battles on this, more so than XI. I feel like I have more control over my character its quite fun indeed, and faster.. The targeting system is extremely annoying though. I also do not like the damaging of the gear which again forces you into crafting.. Then I thought hey I can't complain too much about that since I'm able to wear armor above my level.. Though it became frustrating quite quick calling for someone to please repair my stuff, with many not knowing if they could do it, or not the right level to do it. It seems as if all you are to do on this game is craft, whereas when I read the things they wrote about this game.. It seemed as if exploration and battles were going to be bigger.. So far all I'm doing mostly is crafting.

I'd be here forever
