Call of Duty: Black Ops - one CoD too many?

---

Fast, frenetic and gritty, for some this might just be the best CoD release yet... but is it too much of a good thing?

The latest Call of Duty release has already broken entertainment sales records, and by the time you read this it’s likely gained sentience, started a hard take-off singularity and taken control of all world markets and mediums. So, really, we could fill this page with pictures of kittens and random bits of our porn collection and it would be just as impactful on the success of the mighty CoD juggernaught.

But humour us – because we do have a strong opinion on this game, and – we hope – one that might prove useful.

Anyway, if you’ve been living in cave or just come out of a coma, Black Ops is seventh game in the Call of Duty series. A series, coincidentally, that we’re expecting will became increasingly oddly numbered and referenced when the inevitable Black Ops 2 comes out. It eschews not only the World War 2 settings of the original games, but also the hyper-realised near-future setting of the Modern Warfare games. Instead, Black Ops explores the secret history of the 20th century, as seen through the eyes of black ops specialist Alex Mason.

Bright and shining lies
Black Ops presents a far grittier world than any Call of Duty game before it, and you start off in a typically grim style… strapped to a chair in an interrogation room and getting tortured by faceless minions.

It’s fun times all round, really, and it makes for a great framing reference for the early missions in the game, which play out, effectively, as flashbacks. The first mission in particular is a great set piece that sets up the shadowy world Mason inhabits quite well – you’re part of a secret mission to assassinate Fidel Castro during the Bay of Pigs invasion in the early sixties. It’s a great nod of the head to a turbulent period of history, and this first mission sets up the game’s great themes – identity, the Cold War, and unveiling the real history behind some of the turning points of last century.

In a lot of ways, it’s quite annoying that, in the grand scheme of things, this part of the game will likely be quickly forgotten. Most people will tear through it as little more than a training regime for what many believe is the game’s main event – the online play. The campaign manages to reference historical events and classic conspiracies of the period, culminating in one of the most infamous assassinations in history.

And you might just be the trigger man…

It delivers a slightly different take on the increasingly well-worn military shooter genre. But it’s not perfect, not by a long stretch. There are many frustrating portions of the game that could really use a lot more explanation, and a heavy reliance on scripted events. On harder levels, where death happens often, you will certainly get sick of the same enemies spawning in the same order as your own allies do the same things.

But, overall, it’s probably the strongest story in the franchise yet.

Napalm for fun and profit
There’s a handy little ticker on the multiplayer launch GUI for Black Ops that keeps you up to date on the insanely huge numbers the game is racking up. It reports silly things like miles sprinted, or tonnes of explosive detonated… and it’s staggering. Similarly staggering is just how fast some folks are burning through the levels for virtual soldiers – do these people not have lives?!?

Well… probably not. What they have a serious dedication to one of the most frenetic online experiences you’ll ever enjoy – or not enjoy, as the case may be. Treyarch – Black Ops’ developer – has drawn much criticism in the past for being the red-headed step-child of the Activision stable, has delivered a fiendishly rich experience, easily banishing any worries about its involvement.

I spend too much time commenting and too little time working.

That aside, I agree Black Ops was pathetically buggy on launch, but it now has incredible hitreg and runs well for just about everyone. It's twitchy, slightly spammy play and I'll be drawn back to BC2 soon, but all in all it's a good game, and th efirst int he COD franchise that's made me continue playing.

But then agian if I'd bought the otherthree that are so similar I'd feel a bit ripped off.

Yeah, it's a tough one - I'm finding myself missing the original Modern Warfare a lot. I've pretty much stopped playing Black Ops altogether, to be honest, which is also pretty damning :)

just to add that they also caped the fps to max 125 for a good reason that they want to keep the mp equal, sorry to break the news to you that you will not get a patch to enable max fps at over 125+ (alot of noobs out there are still @ 60fps on mp)

And also the lack of private servers is a big turn off towards alot of old boys in the COD4 MW PC community.

as for the advent of the annual COD titles, they have got a firm grip/dollars on the console market, for a fact alot of the hc players are still sticking to COD4 mw, meaning you only get late comers supporting cod for the PC.

as for me ROCK ON BFC2!!!!

I have played all the cod's.
I feel this one has the worst selection of mp maps compared to the last 3 that came out.
There are no sniper maps – (sorta)
The kill streak rewards are not op +
Full of so many noobs soo many why why are there so many I shoot them and they come back they just keep coming back- (Console)
I think the first few had strong story lines through I can't remember them lol it has been awhile since I have played them. I can only remember fighting at Stalingrad as the female sniper (hope that is the right game) I think the first 3 games tried for more of a historical point of view.

@ Hawkeye - yeah the spawning system is fucking stupid eh. You can start 10-1, one actual death later you can still end up 10-12 before you can get moving again.

@ xBomx you said "just to add that they also caped the fps to max 125 for a good reason that they want to keep the mp equal, sorry to break the news to you that you will not get a patch to enable max fps at over 125+ (alot of noobs out there are still @ 60fps on mp)"

However you can ramp the FPS cap up to 999 with the "/com_maxfps xx" console command, and it appears to stick (even between restarts); my FPS would regularly be between hit 160 till I limited it back down to 85 (3ms less latency is not worth the stress on my GPU IMO).

I picked up Black Ops yesterday, My nephews are staying over for the holidays and their mum won't let them have it in her house (she is a hippie!)

My only gripe is, what with the only one campaign running at at time? It's 2011 so you'ld think they could let more than one person have a campaign running at a time? It's pritty basic I'ld have thought?

@ philo-sofa, thanks for your feedback, on the matter of fps in regards to console commands, sadly though it (console command) has been disable, on all cod platforms even BFBC2.

IMO if you want proper ping, for mp of course, PC's is still best in comparison to console's, even with an outdated graphics card one can and should tweak/downgrade their configuration and visual setups to synchronize with the GPU power capabilities, to achieve decent fps in conjunction with your ping.

just for bragging rights i can get over 700fps on cod4 mw and thats with full visual setup in game and AMD catalyst, but conventionally we run into server fps registration issues when we exceed over a certain fps, so tweaking it for a suitable and stable fps is key.

and as for the ping side of things if you want a decent ping timing you can risk port forwarding your connection(s)(possible for consoles too, necessary if you want to play with people outside of australia or to reach anyone with a crappy connection), well unless your with Telstra (local p2p only) you should get very decent timing even on a wireless setup.

and em oh yea its time your BFBC2

I like it. I, up until recently, have still been playing Cgo CoD4 because I have much wub for da promod. Black Ops already has sniper only servers and all of the other permutations of CoD PC goodness we've come to expect.
It's addictive and over the top, but it is not unlike it's movie counterparts in terms of the prevalent 'must-out-do' predecessor mentality.
BFBC2 can suck my balls, it has got nothing on competitive CoD, and is a bore once everything is unlocked. IMO of course.....

Just my opinion but after playing though all of the Call of Duty titles over the years it seems Infinity Ward made the CoD series what it is and the Treyarch CoD games are just crap made to fill in the waiting time for the Infinity Ward release.

Call of Duty [Infinity Ward] AWESOME
Call of Duty 2 [Infinity Ward] AWESOME
Call of Duty 3 [Treyarch] CRAP
Call of Duty 4 MW [Infinity Ward] AWESOME
Call of Duty 5 WaW [Treyarch] CRAP
Call of Duty 6 MW2 [Infinity Ward] AWESOME
Call of Duty 7 BO [Treyarch] CRAP

@ xBomx cheers for your reply, but am not sure what "sadly though it (console command) has been disable, on all cod platforms even BFBC2." means? How is BFBC2 a 'COD platform' - are you meaning 'console commands, on console (gaming) platforms'?

So many questions....

I'm starting to feel right at home in Atomic. So far, the reviews have been pretty fair, and as coincidence would have it, pretty much mirror my own.

It's simple to summarise CoD: BO - 'Fast Twitch Mindless Mash'. This is ok in short bursts, but certainly doesn't warrant an $89.95 price tag which really is taking the piss out of how un-decerning the paying public is these days.

And no it doesnt suck getting old. Its bloody amusing sitting back watching the plebs run around in circles extolling the virtues of games which exploit their blinkered view on a game.

Single player was enjoyable, but again, as stated in the review, dropped like a bag of spuds once played.

For me, the highlight was the zombie mutations. The JFK and Nixon voice overs are hilarious.

Still doesn't warrant an $89.95 price tag. And they are arrogant enough to never even put the game on sale. Noticed that?

Treyarch is laughing all the way to the bank.

I'd actually have to say the story in Black Ops was the worst, out of all the CoD games I've played.

The plot twists seemed more akin to something seen in Get Smart, in fact, through the missions in the underwater base, I thought I was playing 'No One Lives Forever 2', and that was a parody of espionage. On top of this, there were just too many shredded guitar cords, for a shooter with a "historical" background. It's definitely a game targeted at kids.

At least, however, the multiplayer is far more reliable than MW2, although it's still not rock solid. I've had a fair share of "connection interrupted" errors, and seen many players with a normal ping sky rocket up to 900. Certainly, if you have another CoD game, it's worth a rental, but not much else.

So over CoD, lost interest at MW2

I lost interest when they stopped offering LAN play. Havn't bought anything other than CoD6 without it.
I am completely sick of the lack of LAN play in modern games. The CoD franchise, in my opinion, is driving the move away from it due to its popularity.
I see this as a major insult, they are in effect saying "you play games, so you just want to be alone and frag people you can't see, because you're anti-social".
Seriously, stuff that, I wanna see the facial expression when I headshot someone, make it much more enjoyable, plus you can have a few drinks with the folk at the same time.
This is the main reason I didn't buy SC2 as well.
Long Live LANing!
