Review: Cataclysm - five more levels, one pissed off dragon, and a whole new world to explore. Welcome to the end of days, Azeroth style!

Traditionally, World of Warcraft expansions have upped the level cap, added new high-level regions to explore, and maybe a few new crafting professions and a new race or two. The Cataclysm expansion goes way further. In lore terms, the world of Azeroth has literally been shattered – coastal regions have been flooded or destroyed, cities attacked and buildings ruined, and the balance of power forever changed.

Every starting area and major quest-line has been updated to fit into this new world, while at the upper end of the game regions have opened up for level 80 players to start their advance to the new level cap of 85. So while the upper end of Cataclysm isn’t quite as large as the ten-level-ranged Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King, the overall changes to the case game are both vaster, and far more interesting.

For this review we’ve split the work between our high-level WoW expert, Liz Skuthorpe, and me, your humble Editor, who’s been exploring just how messed up his beloved Night Elves are following the rise of Deathwing...

A whole new game
We can’t stress enough how different Warcraft now feels. The new starter areas and Cataclysm-affected regions freshen up gameplay immensely. For a WoW veteran, the impact of seeing familiar areas like Auberdine shattered and inundated with evil elementals is oddly... harrowing.

At the same time, the changes to the game’s base mechanics have well and truly gotten us hooked all over again. The new Talent system effectively does away with the dabbling of cookie-cutter builds and forces you to focus on one Talent group at a time. Professions have all been cleaned up, and the two new ones – Inscription, for making Glyphs and a range of stupidly useful scrolls, and the very cleverly implemented Archaeology – really round out the game.

And then there’s the graphical upgrades. WoW is still ultra cartoony, but Azeroth and its attendant continents/worlds have never looked better. Lush grasses and shrubbery cover the ground, the view distance has been bumped up to officially ‘hella impressive’ levels and the water... well, it’s got to be seen to be believed.

It’s almost like devs at Blizzard have mugged someone from Crytek and stolen their liquid physics engine for a laugh.

The high end
Azeroth has been destroyed and Hyjal and Vashj’ir beckon but how do these new zones hold up in the New World Order? Our illustrious editor has covered the noob zones so let’s have a look at what to expect for levels 80 through 85.

Blizzard learned a few lessons after the initial release of World of Warcraft and the Burning Crusade expansion. Focused narrative quest-lines were the order of the day for the second expansion Wrath of the Lich King, and the developers have continued in that vein for Cataclysm. All the new high-level zones; Hyjal, Vashj’ir, Deepholm, Uldum, Twilight Highlands, have quite a linear feel to the questing – which may be a negative if you like a more open sand-box feel, but you won’t be lost for quests.

For higher level players the biggest change to the game will most likely be the new outlook on dungeon difficulty. Prior to the expansion Blizzard hinted that the easy-days of chain-pulling through heroics would be dead in the water come Cataclsym, and that is certainly true. Dungeons and heroics have seen a return to crowd control, so it’s time to keybind that Polymorph, Hex, Banish or Entangling Roots spell (here’s a hint, it’s in your Spellbook).

And those elite dungeon mobs hit like Mac trucks driven by angry bears – which means both tanks and healers are feeling the strain and the challenge. All in all, it means that heroics feel they way they should – really hard, and satisfying to complete. You’ll also need to get those regular dungeon ‘Blue’ rewards before you can think about heroics. And you’ll need those heroic rewards before you can think about raiding. Easy-mode is gone, and it feels glorious!

Which pretty much sums up our feelings on the entire expansion. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we need to go see a man about some boars...

I came back after a year break from WoW to check out cataclysm, the game has indeed changed a lot, for the better imo. It's amazing how much the game has changed, but its not enough to keep me paying.

Btw were you meant to say the 2 newest professions, since inscription was out last year when I stopped playing in WotLK?

I find the Outlands very boring still. They should have redone all quest lines ,not just those in the expansion.
Cataclysm is good for a while but after a while you release its just the same. Not forgetting the latest round of Patches to kill DPS off.

this game is awesome. I've played WoW since 2005 - yeah I know dumb :p I've tried numerous times to quit. I gave up for the most part while I did my Masters, but still spent some time playing :(. Then I took up a job at a place which plays WoW on company time. Oh noes... I managed to stop fo 4 months last year, then this beauty comes out and I started up 2 weeks before release. A week after it came out I've stopped playing for good. Never to return. They still play at work, so technically I could escape doing real work for play, but WOW is now so boring I'd rather do REAL WORK.

Completed "Loremaster of Cataclysm", which is basically doing nearly all the quests in the new 80-85 zones - Was a lot of fun. Enjoyed it heaps and really got into the story (Which is why I play). Seemed to be more "interactive" quests as well this time, with movement based challenges requiring careful timing (The Azuregos questline in Azshara stands out, and is my fave quest chain in Cataclysm)

Rolled an undead priest and up to 43 with it to check the new content - Like it a lot. Not a fan of how you can get the levels you need before moving up to the next lot, but leveling is faster now (As in, I use to go to 2 or 4 lvl 20-25 zones to get those 5 levels, but now you seem to get them in one zone, then can proceed onto a 25-30 zone) - guess that means you can roll more toons so you can play through the other content

Noticed I've racked up 143 days on my main - Sad bit is I can't tell if thats good or bad :P

Been playing since the games original release and I couldn't disagree more.

The game right now is the worst I've ever seen it.

Normally an expansion is 10 levels. This time it was only 5. Half the levels means less zones, less quests, less dungeons, less to do. It also means

you find yourself hitting 85 in about 3 days asking yourself 'was that it?'

Dont plan on raiding anytime soon unless you are in the top echelon of raiding guilds, the raids are just way too difficult right now for the

average raider. There are no Karazhans this expansion.

5 man heroics are good if you are with friends and guildies or could be a 3 hour long wipefest of people screaming at each other if you use WoWs

dungeon finder.

Questing is pretty good on your first character. Every toon after that has to go through the same exact quests step by step no deviation no variety

and it gets old fast.

PVP is awful. Every week blizzard makes major adjustments to everyones classes so one week you could be godlike in pvp and next week everyone is

smashing your face in, it changes week to week.

Once you level up your professions there isnt really anything to do with them.

Ores and herbs disappear sometimes when you get close to them and you cant pick them because blizzard overused 'phasing' in the new zones. The zone

changes as you quest.

There were MAJOR changes done to the entire healing class and a majority of healers didnt like it and switched to killing toons.

Most of all the customer service between blizzard and their customers has gone down hill in a major way. They recently stripped longtime players of

something special after promising them they wouldnt then refused to give it back. http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2046835986?page=1

You really can go on and on. This expansion was rushed and not the quality blizzard normally puts out. Pretty much the only good thing right now is

starting new characters and checking out the changes to the lower zones.

I give it a 3/10
