Gallery: We get our hands on GIGABYTE's new pro-grade overclocking 'board, the X58A-OC. It's a thing of truly rare beauty.

We almost literally had to beg to get a hold of the new X58A-OC motherboard from GIGABYTE. It's so focused on high-end overclocking that the company simply isn't planning on sending it out to media for reviewing!

Then again, Atomic isn't most media. When we first opened this puppy up, we may have drooled a little.

SO what's the deal? This board's aimed at one segment of the enthusiast market - overclockers. It's not a board for a high-end system, and it's not aimed at gamer's who like to get a bit of extra hardware performance on the side. No, the X58A-OC is meant to be run with LN2 or dice, out of  case and hand-sealed against any leaks.

Here are the raw details:

  • Supports Intel® LGA1366 CPUs for extreme overclocking
  • OC-VRM delivers optimum 12 phase overclockable VRM design featuring POScaps, MPFC chokes, and DriverMOSFETs
  • OC-Touch provides onboard buttons for fine tuning CPU frequency
  • OC-PEG provides 2 onboard SATA power connectors for stable graphics overclocking
  • OC-Cool features a new LED lit thermal design and 7x 4-pin Smart Fan connectors to control system-wide temperature with ease
  • OC-DualBIOS™ provides flexible BIOS selection for efficient OC setting
  • 4-Way CrossfireX™ and 3-Way SLI™ support for ultimate graphics performance
  • Supports USB 3.0 with superfast transfer rates of up to 5Gbps
  • GIGABYTE 3x USB Power with On/Off Charge USB ports

Serious. OC. Bidness. We'll be doing our besto have a good solid look at this in an upcoming issue, but for now we've given it a serious photographic once-over so you can get a closer look at it yourselves.

It is important to keep in mind that this mobo is purely designed for overclocking by Gigabyte's tame overclockers, unlike a lot of previous 'overclocker' motherboards that combine extensive enthusiast features with overclocking.

This makes for some seemingly strange feature decisions, like PS/2 ports over USB (PS/2 is better when overclocking because USB hardware and signalling add overhead).

In other words it is a board designed to run gloriously for short, ultra cooled bursts of record breaking.
