Star Trek review

Depth of character in a Sci-Fi film, of all places.
Fantastic casting
A feverishly exciting look that regails the feel of the original show
Action sequences are combined with emotional poignancy
Fantastic pacing
Honours the original series whilst being it's own film
A little too much shaeky cam in some fight sequences
Derives into a run of the mill action film near the end
And what shoes to fill, how is it that JJ Abrams, a non-fan no less, can re-invigorate a series with a new Star Trek film?
Regarding remakes, it's customary to expect the worst, but shamefully delightful to see the exception. So much could have gone wrong with this film yet Abrams approach to achieve the basics of story telling and characterisation first and then use the texture and ideology of the original series as a guide rather then an impenetrable law has only emphasised the spirit of the Star Trek universe.
(SPOILER ALERT) It begins with such intrigue following the lives of Kirk and Spock through their contrasting childhood to adulthood and their later rivalry, credit has to be given to the writers for the intelligent setting. As someone unfamiliar with the Star Trek world I felt comfortable re-learning it, getting reaquantied with all the familiar and unfamiliar characters.
A powerful tool in the directors utility belt is watching the hero grow into a hero, and Abram does this by investing into their history, their origins, telling us about their families, their mannerisms; watching them through their journey is all the more rewarding.
I don't feel Abrams strong suite is the action sequence, but his attention to substance is still riveting, emotional investment is the fuel you use and this film has enough to sustain itself.
There are sequences in space where there is complete silence, Lucas you can take note of this, there is no sound in space. Thumbs up for a director finally realising this.
I can't believe I am saying this, from someone fed up with sequels that solely exsist to capitalise rather then honour and serve the concept, this Star Trek film deserves a sequel, it has earned it and I want another.
