Assassin’s Creed

Absolutely gorgeous!
Large cities to run around in
The first few hours
The rest of the game
Repetitive! Repetitive! REPETITIVE!
Assassin? Right...
Those damn drunks!
I so wanted to love Assassin's Creed, I really did. I just thank the gods that I bought this at a budget price.
I'll get to the story in a minute, first off, the gameplay. That game starts off good enough, a large open city full of opportunity to do various side missions before finding and disposing of your target.
That is, until you realise you will be doing these same sidemissions over, and over.... and OVER again. Every single set of sidemissions are EXACTLY the same for each and every city.
There's also a bunch of collectables scattered throughout the kingdom, and your reward for gathering every single one of them. Nothing. Yep... nothing...
Then there's the story. All over the net, people claim that the story of Assassin's Creed is great and awesome and oh so well done. I say, WHAT STORY?! The entire time you have no idea what's going on, apart from knowing that you have to kill some guy who's terrorising the local populace. It's only until the last hour of the (probably too long) game where a story starts to appear, and it makes you go "ah... there's a story!" Oh, and in that last hour, all you do is fight wave after wave of around 20 guys at once. Yes... quite the "Assassin" you are.... Speaking of which, just about every time you do any kind of mission, you ALWAYS get spotted, and end up having to kill a bunch of guards. Whatever happened to "kill one guy, sneak away"?
However, the game does have some positives. It looks amazing! After climbing to the top of a tower to view the surroundings you can't help but gasp. Also, the climbing mechanics are very impressive. There's no set way for you to climb, and Altair actually places his hands and feet and looks where he's going as he climbs. In fact, his motions as a whole are very well put together. Very impressive.
The combat itself is alright (it all comes down to timing), and it always felt good to hear that last crunch as your sword slices through an enemy. More tweaking needed to be done to the actual assassinations though. Your options are very limited, and considering that's the whole point of the game, it's disappointing.
The game ends on a cliffhanger, and there's supposed to be another one coming out eventually. The game has huge potential, so let's hope they actually make the next one fun from start to end, as opposed to from start to 2 hours in.
