WinMX is peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing software with a vast number of users.

It works in a similar way to other P2P software, with an area for searching for files, a transfer window for viewing all uploads and downloads processed, a graph for checking your available bandwidth and a chat window for communicating with other WinMX users.

Every type of file you could possibly think of is available, although the majority of files will be audio, video and pictures, which is what the search facility is tailored for.

Searching is straightforward, simply involving entering artist and/or title details before a vast list of matching results is presented. Each result comes complete with details on the user, their connection speed, file size and the number of people queueing for the file.

Search results can be limited to a certain connection speed if you wish, and when searching for MP3 files it is possible to be more specific - define the minimum bitrate of the file, for example, and weed out poor quality files.
